Position Overview
The Assistant Inventory Manager (AIM) plays a vital role in ensuring the smooth and efficient flow of inventory throughout MODE. This position works closely with the Inventory Manager to maintain balance in all aspects of inventory management, supporting a seamless retail operation.
At MODE, inventory is constantly moving—new consignment arrives daily, merchandise is priced and placed on the sales floor each day, items sell throughout the day, and unsold consignments are returned regularly. The Assistant Inventory Manager helps oversee these processes to maximize productivity, organization, and efficiency.
A strong understanding of fashion brands, designers, and current resale trends is essential, as accurate pricing and inventory decisions directly impact the success of the business.
Key Responsibilities
Working under the guidance of the Inventory Manager, the Assistant Inventory Manager is responsible for assisting with the daily needs of the business, including but are not limited to:
Inventory Organization
- Maintain an organized backroom by sorting incoming consignment by shelf location and date received.
- Ensure inventory awaiting pricing is organized chronologically to support an efficient workflow.
Pricing
- Price inventory consistently each day to maintain a steady flow of merchandise to the sales floor.
- Prioritize pricing the oldest inventory first, based on the order received.
- Expedite pricing for highly sought-after merchandise when appropriate.
- Utilize knowledge of designer and contemporary fashion brands to accurately evaluate and price merchandise.
Consignment Returns
- Partner with the Inventory Manager to ensure unsold consigned items are returned to consignors accurately and in a timely manner.
- Help maintain consistent inventory flow by preventing backlogs in the returns process.
Social Media
- Assist in managing MODE's social media presence by showcasing new arrivals and engaging with followers.
- Collaborate with the Inventory Manager to create content featuring new merchandise and respond to customer interactions promptly.
Website Operations
- Oversee the Inventory Associate responsible for website listings.
- Monitor productivity and ensure the quality and accuracy of online inventory.
Sales Floor Support
- Assist with processing incoming consignment.
- Support floor moves, merchandising, and visual displays.
- Provide assistance to the sales team as needed to ensure an exceptional customer experience.
Training
- Assist in training new members of the management team on consignment intake, pricing procedures, and consignment returns.
- Help reinforce company standards and best practices.
Schedule & Availability
MODE operates seven days a week. The Assistant Inventory Manager's schedule may vary based on the needs of the business and inventory flow.
Typical Schedule
- Monday–Friday
- 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM
This position requires travel between both MODE locations (Raleigh and Durham) as business needs dictate.
Because retail environments are fast-paced and continually changing, flexibility is essential. Evening and weekend availability may be required based on inventory volume, staffing needs, special events, and overall business demands.
Qualifications
- Strong knowledge of contemporary, luxury, and designer fashion brands, with the ability to accurately identify labels, assess quality, and recognize current market trends.
- Passion for fashion, resale, and providing exceptional customer service.
- Highly organized with exceptional attention to detail.
- Ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced retail environment.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate effectively across departments.
- Comfortable using social media platforms and technology to support business operations.
- Ability to lead, coach, and train team members while promoting a positive and productive work environment.
- Self-motivated with a strong work ethic and a proactive approach to problem-solving.
- Previous retail, consignment, inventory management, or fashion merchandising experience is preferred.
