In partnership with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, MobilizeGreen seeks conservation-minded Engineering/Architecture Fellows who want a career opportunity with the federal government. Through its partnership with the US Fish & Wildlife Service (“FWS”), MobilizeGreen is implementing the FWS’ Maintenance and Infrastructure Fellowship Program for participants. Fellows will work on a variety of projects on a network of public lands and waters called the National Wildlife Refuge System.

As a Fellow, you will work in a beautiful setting and will gain experience as a general/civil/geotechnical/hydraulic/structural/environmental engineer, architect, construction management or engineering technician (GS-0899); or community planner or environmental protection specialist (GS-0099). Through mentorship and training, Fellows will gain the opportunity to launch their career.

Duty Station and Location: Positions for the 2026 Maintenance and Infrastructure Fellowship Program (MIFP) cohort will be located at FWS refuges and offices across the country. Locations are still being finalized but we recommend that candidates be prepared to relocate. If you are selected for an interview we will discuss locations.

Term: 26 weeks (6 months), Full-Time (40 hours per week), on-site position. The fellowship is eligible for extension up to 3 years (36 months).

Position Duties

  • Performs trainee level engineering analyses associated with segments of engineering, architecture, physical science, planning or environmental protection assignments to include technical planning activities; data collection; modeling and data analyses; analyses of site location and/or conditions; and analyses of instrumentation data. Analysis assignments may involve trainee level assignments in one or more specialty areas.
  • Gains professional knowledge of, and skills in applying, basic theories, concepts, principles, and methodology for area of practice in order to accomplish developmental engineering and/or architecture assignments using basic techniques, procedures, and methods; carry out, interpret, and explain basic computations and calculations; and convey findings.
  • Completes limited engineering designs in a developmental capacity with knowledge of and skill in applying basic theories, concepts, principles, and methodology for field of practice to accomplish developmental engineering assignments using basic techniques, procedures and methods.
  • Participates in and performs developmental tasks associated with facility examinations, reviews, and/or inspections.
  • Performs developmental assignments and tasks associated with any of the following: project management; administration of contracts and agreements; compliance; and database operation.
  • Apply common qualitative and quantitative analytical techniques and common project management principles, methods, tools, and techniques.
  • Uses automated engineering systems and applications and ability to use computers, software applications, databases, and automated systems.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

General

  • Acquires basic knowledge and develops skills in a specific practice area.
  • Applies prescribed techniques and procedures in accordance with established criteria to perform assigned tasks.
  • Performs routine technical work which does not require previous experience.
  • Acquires an understanding of professional and ethical responsibilities.

Technical

  • Collects data and gathers information or documents.
  • Performs standard computations or analysis.
  • Prepares drawings and visual aids.
  • Observes and documents construction and progress activities.
  • Performs basic survey and measurement work.
  • Assists on other tasks such as: preparation of permit applications, material testing, drawings, and computer-aided design (CAD) work.

Supervision

  • Receives close supervision on all aspects of assignments.

Communications

  • Possesses basic oral and written communication skills.
  • Interacts with staff, general public, officials, and contractors.
  • Ability to effectively convey information to individuals or groups, taking into account the nature of the information (e.g., technical).

Outreach

  • Involved in outreach activities with community service organizations, contractors and the general public.

Required

Qualifications/Skills and Knowledge:

  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to learn efficiently and put new skills into practice.
  • Ability to effectively convey information to individuals or groups, taking into account the nature of the information (e.g., technical).
  • Ability to work well independently (self-motivated) and as part of a team.
  • Curious and passionate about engineering, architecture, construction management, planning, and/or environmental protection in the conservation world.
  • Earned or pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in architecture or civil, general, geotechnical, hydraulic, structural, or environmental engineering.
  • May have received or have an interest in pursuing a Professional Engineer license.
  • U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident.
