Facilities & Engineering Intern — Moat Systems Inc

Company: Moat Systems Inc (moat.app)

Location: American Fork, UT (Alpine School District) · Ogden, UT (as needed)

Type: Summer Contract (Full-Time)

Internship Details Duration: Summer (approximately May–August) Hours: Full-time (40 hrs/week) Compensation: Starting at $18/hr

About the Role

Moat is building the AI-powered operating system for facilities management — helping schools and institutions eliminate paper binders, automate preventive maintenance, and make smarter capital planning decisions with real data.

But none of that works without a critical first step: getting every asset into the system.

As a Facilities & Engineering Intern, you'll apply your coursework in a real-world, field-based setting. You'll walk school buildings — mechanical rooms, rooftops, utility spaces — and bring every piece of critical infrastructure online in Moat. The data you capture powers our AI extraction engine, drives automated maintenance schedules, and gives facility directors a real-time picture of their building health for the first time.

This role is a great fit for students in mechanical, electrical, or software engineering, as well as facilities management — all of these disciplines intersect in the field and in our platform. Whether you're drawn to the physical systems, the data pipelines, or the software that ties it all together, there's real, meaningful work here.

This is a hands-on internship at a fast-moving startup where your technical knowledge directly shapes the product. You'll see your work reflected in the platform the same day you do it.

Why This Role Matters

Every asset you document becomes a living digital record — automatically linked to OEM manuals, maintenance histories, warranty data, and AI-generated service schedules. This is a chance to bridge your academic training with the cutting-edge software transforming the facilities industry. You're not just inventorying equipment — you're building the data layer that makes an entire school district's operations intelligent.

What You'll Learn & Do

  • Apply engineering and FM principles in a real institutional setting (K–12 school facilities)
  • Conduct physical asset inventories across mechanical, electrical, and building systems: HVAC equipment (RTUs, air handlers, boilers, chillers, etc.), electrical equipment (panels, transformers, generators), appliances and other major fixed units
  • Follow the Moat asset documentation workflow for each asset: photograph the equipment nameplate/placard, enter metadata (location, building, floor, room, asset type), review and verify AI-extracted data for accuracy, print and affix QR code label to the asset
  • Attach OEM manuals to assets — feeding the knowledge base our AI uses to generate maintenance plans
  • Gain exposure to CMMS/asset management software and how AI is reshaping facilities operations
  • Coordinate with facility managers and custodial staff on-site
  • Contribute to capital planning data that real clients use to make budget decisions

Qualifications

Required:

  • Currently enrolled in a degree program in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, Facilities Management, or a closely related field
  • Comfortable working around heavy machinery and mechanical/electrical equipment
  • Familiar with basic safety protocols in industrial or institutional settings (PPE usage, lockout/tag-out awareness, confined space awareness)
  • Detail-oriented — data accuracy is critical because it feeds directly into AI models and automated workflows
  • Reliable transportation to job sites in the American Fork / Alpine School District area
  • Physically capable of walking large facilities, climbing ladders, and working in tight or elevated spaces

Preferred:

  • Coursework or hands-on experience in HVAC, electrical systems, building systems, or facilities operations
  • Experience with asset management, inventory, or field data collection tools
  • Comfortable using a smartphone or tablet for data entry
  • Prior experience in schools, government, or commercial facilities
  • Curiosity about how AI and software are transforming legacy industries

A Day in the Field

  1. Arrive on site and check in with the facility manager
  2. Walk the facility systematically — mechanical rooms, rooftop units, electrical rooms, kitchens, etc.
  3. For each qualifying asset: photograph the placard → enter location info → confirm AI-extracted data → print & tag with a QR code
  4. Handle edge cases — missing placards, unidentifiable equipment — and flag for a later quality assurance review
  5. Wrap up with a site summary and sync data — your work is live in the Moat platform before you even leave the parking lot

Working Conditions

  • Primarily outdoor and indoor mechanical spaces — expect dust, heat, and noise
  • Must be comfortable on ladders and in utility/mechanical rooms
  • PPE (hard hat) may be required on certain sites (Moat will provide required PPE if needed)
  • Driving between school sites is expected
  • Occasional travel to Ogden School District may be required

Daily Equipment & Tools

  • Moat mobile app (provided — iOS or Android)
  • QR code label printer (provided)
