Data Engineer

MMD Services
Naperville, IL Full Time
POSTED ON 10/24/2026
AVAILABLE BEFORE 12/18/2026

Overview

Our client is a well-established organization in the logistics and distribution space. They are building out their data engineering capability and are looking for engineers who want to grow with a team that invests in development. This is an opportunity to work on systems that directly support how products move and how the business makes decisions.

Primary Responsibilities

The Data Engineer is a hands-on individual contributor who owns well-scoped technical problems, delivers reliable solutions, and grows toward broader system-level ownership.

This role is focused on strong execution within an established architecture. Engineers at this level are expected to take defined problems from design through delivery, ask good questions when requirements are unclear, and contribute to how solutions are built. The Data Engineer is expected to have working proficiency in the team’s primary tech stack, a developing understanding of system design principles, comfort with APIs and integrations, and solid testing and debugging skills.

The Data Engineer role sits on the individual contributor core track and is the step before Senior Engineer.

DUTIES, TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Build and maintain software features and data pipelines, ensuring solutions are maintainable, well-tested, and aligned with architectural and security standards.

Own assigned components end-to-end, from implementation through testing, deployment, and operational support, with guidance from senior engineers on broader design decisions.

Participate in technical design discussions and solution planning, contributing ideas and raising trade-offs for the team to consider.

Collaborate with product managers, designers, and other stakeholders to turn business requirements into working technical solutions.

Use logs, metrics, and analytics to troubleshoot issues and improve the performance and reliability of the systems you support.

Share knowledge with teammates, participate in code reviews, and support new team members as you gain experience.

Continuously build technical skill, stay current with the tools the team uses, and look for ways to improve day-to-day development practices.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

Solid proficiency in programming languages, frameworks, and common software design patterns, with the ability to implement features within an existing system.

Ability to build reliable, well-structured solutions and apply engineering and security standards consistently.

Ability to work effectively with product, design, QA, and engineering teams, communicate technical concepts clearly, and ask for clarification when requirements are ambiguous.

Ability to use metrics, logs, and analytics to diagnose problems and evaluate system behavior.

Willingness to contribute to team practices, participate in reviews, and support teammates.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

2-4 years of experience with data engineering technologies (SQL, Python, Spark) and at least one cloud platform (AWS/Azure/GCP).

Working knowledge of data modeling, integration patterns, and data quality best practices.

Exposure to analytics platforms and BI tools (Power BI, Tableau). Familiarity with MLOps concepts is a plus.

Interest in connecting technical decisions to business outcomes.

Strong communication and collaboration skills.

Bachelor’s degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related field preferred or similar coding education alternatives to traditional four-year degrees.
