The Director of Test and Measurement Engineering (TME) will play a critical role in driving the TME strategy for the business to grow and deliver world-class engineering solutions in opto-mechanical products and test software solutions. This position requires a skilled ability to collaborate cross-functionally to achieve business objectives and foster a culture of continuous improvement. Leveraging deep expertise in precision and accuracy of measurements, test automation and process optimization for high-precision, complex optomechanical assemblies, you will develop and implement objectives to continuously improve resolutions and accuracies of measurements, while optimizing resources, in an environment with greater and greater product complexity. This is an onsite role based at our Irvine, California facility. In this role, you will report to the General Manager.

Compensation and Benefits:
Salary Pay Range: $230,000 to $260,000 per year. This range is a good faith estimate of the expected salary range for this position, based on a wide range of factors including qualifications, experience and training, operational and business needs and other considerations permitted by law. At MKS, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for the role.
Bonus: This position is eligible for a discretionary annual bonus, in an amount to be determined by MKS [or as applicable].

You Will Make an Impact By:
- Direct the development, implementation, and maintenance of measurement systems and test software solutions to automate the alignment, attachment, and test of precision optical components, optomechanical assemblies and laser systems
- Develop and execute a multidisciplinary Test and Measurement Engineering (TME) strategy. Set objectives, guide initiatives, and build a premier TME team
- Own the Measurement System Analysis methodology: align TME strategies with product design, manufacturing engineering, supply chain, quality, reliability engineering, and customer needs and strategies
- Empower a subject matter expert team to ensure comprehensive understanding of optomechanical precision and accuracy throughout the product lifecycle
- Collaborate with different teams to estimate project and product costs. This includes calculating the resources (equipment, materials, people) and labor needed for development, assembly, alignment, and testing. Optimize the return on investment considering the first pass yield and scrap rates when selecting test and measurement strategies
- A bachelor’s degree in STEM related discipline (advanced degree preferred), with a minimum of 10 years’ experience in an engineering leadership role in optics, optomechanical, lasers, fiber optics, photonics, or related field
- A proven ability to solve problems utilizing a balance of analytical and technical skills. Excellent project and resource management capabilities
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, capable of presenting technical information up and down in the organization. Must be able to accurately communicate information and ideas so others will understand
- Effective and thorough knowledge of product development and quality improvement tools (for example: PDP, FMEA, DfX, Poke-yoke, 8D)
- Ability to inspire a culture focused on innovation, collaboration, quality and accountability. Develop and mentor engineers and managers
Preferred Skills:
- Familiar with computer interfacing instruments and hardware communication protocols and test automation
- Excellent understanding of extreme precision optical and mechanical drawings, GD&T, tolerance analysis, uncertainty budgets and ways to control them
- Execution of Statistical Process Control (SPC) and, more generally, six-sigma principles
Supervisory Scope:
- This position includes direct and second level management of a group of approximately 10 FTE, as well as managing associated budgets
- Office and laboratory work is required, with work in a cleanroom environment up to 50% of the time. Wearing of Personal Protective Equipment as well as cleanroom garb is required
- Must be able to lift, move, or position equipment up to 35 pounds while working in a laboratory environment
- Noise level in the laboratory environment can temporarily be elevated, but does not typically require PPE
- Travel Requirements: Up to 20% Travel is required, including international travel
