The Kittery School District is currently seeking a Librarian/Media Specialist. The role of a school librarian has evolved significantly. Having a school librarian at the primary level is an important part of students' literacy development. The school librarian fosters a love of reading, provides guidance in selecting books, models oral reading fluency and comprehension to reinforce the learning taking place in the classroom. Through books and lessons the librarian also builds vocabulary development of our youngest learners. This position is not confined to the traditional tasks of managing the collection and book checkouts; instead, it focuses on actively engaging with students and faculty to support their educational needs.
Qualifications / Job Summary:
• Reinforce foundational literacy skills for students PreK-3rd grade. Passion for fostering a lifelong love of reading and learning in students. Actively circulate among students in the library, offering assistance with book selections, and research projects. Provide guidance on evaluating the quality and validity of online information for older students.
• Create a collection that ensures diversity and representation, including books and multimedia materials. Foster a welcoming and inclusive library environment that encourages student exploration and learning. Stay current with emerging trends in library science and early childhood literacy.
• Consult with teachers and staff to support curriculum and classroom instruction. Identify and provide resources that enhance teaching and learning across various subjects.
• Communication and interpersonal skills are needed to collaborate with the Administrators and Literacy Coach to plan and monitor interventions for students.
• Organize and host library events, such as author visits, book clubs, and reading challenges.
• Experience in an educational setting, preferably at the primary school level.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Master's degree in Library Science, Information Science, or a related field preferred.
• Maine Dept. of Education certification 071 (Library/Media Specialist)
The ideal candidate for this position will have a degree in Library Information Services and experience working with children ages 4-10. (required and/or preferred qualifications and/or degree; please be as specific as possible)
