What are the responsibilities and job description for the Process Engineer position at Mitchell Plastics?
Position Summary
We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Process Engineer to join our manufacturing team. In this role, you will drive continuous improvement initiatives, optimize manufacturing processes, support new equipment launches, and play a key role in delivering high-quality products in a fast-paced production environment. This is an excellent opportunity for an engineering professional who thrives on problem-solving, process optimization, and cross-functional collaboration. Key Responsibilities Analyze manufacturing performance by comparing established process standards (labor hours, machine cycle times, etc.) against actual production results, and recommend process improvements with measurable timelines to the Process Engineering Manager. Lead continuous improvement initiatives focused on cycle time reduction, labor efficiency, scrap reduction, process optimization, and material utilization. Review and analyze SPC data, FMEAs, DOE studies, and process parameters to drive process capability and operational excellence. Develop and implement error-proofing and mistake-proofing solutions to improve product quality and prevent defects. Escalate incapable processes or product concerns to management in a timely manner. Support the launch and implementation of new production equipment through PSO, including coordination of APQP and PPAP activities. Prepare capital expenditure justifications for new equipment and process improvement initiatives. Investigate and implement innovative production methods to improve productivity, efficiency, and quality. Serve as the primary technical liaison for vendors and external suppliers. Prepare and present regular updates on process capability and manufacturing performance metrics. Participate in Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP) activities, including work-cell layout design, KCC/KPC selection, and preventive maintenance planning. Lead 8D problem-solving activities related to process and capability non-conformances, ensuring effective corrective actions and customer communication where required. Initiate Engineering Change Requests (ECRs) for process modifications and maintain accurate process-related documentation. Assist in developing and delivering training programs for assembly personnel on new products, equipment, and manufacturing processes. Develop and maintain preventive and predictive maintenance schedules for process equipment. Ensure successful implementation and stabilization of new production processes until capability targets are achieved. Maintain and update all process documentation, including operator instructions, process specifications, flow charts, control plans, machine setup instructions, PFMEAs, and standardized work procedures. Coordinate sourcing and replacement of tooling, testing equipment, fixtures, and prototypes in collaboration with Project Engineering. Participate in DFA/DFM reviews to support manufacturability and product optimization. Communicate quality, process, and product-related updates to plant personnel through visual management and information boards. Ensure all manufacturing processes and equipment comply with applicable health, safety, and environmental standards, including SDS documentation requirements. Perform additional duties and special projects as assigned. Qualifications Diploma in Engineering. Minimum 2 years of manufacturing experience, preferably within automotive plastics or injection molding environments. Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills. Excellent communication, organizational, and teamwork abilities. Proficient computer literacy and experience with manufacturing-related systems.
