Mitchell Hamline is seeking to hire a Senior Career Advisor. This position is responsible for providing career counseling and advising current students and alumni. This Senior Career Advisor is also responsible for outreach with both students and the legal community coordinating and presenting learning and employment opportunities. Additionally, the position supports the Assistant Dean of CPD by mentoring other members of the department and leading department initiatives.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Career Advising

  • Provide support and one-on-one counseling to law students and alumni regarding their career development and job search strategies
  • Stay informed about the latest trends and developments in these industries to
  • Assist students and alumni in exploring career paths and gaining relevant experience.
  • Partner with students and alumni to develop job search strategies, polish application materials, develop and practice interview skills, formulate negotiation strategy and provide overall job application support.
  • Use 12twenty to support the mission of the office, including tracking engagement activities with students, alumni and employers, ensuring that records remain accurate and up to date. Track and report on student and alumni employment outcomes.
  • Engage in regular outreach with students and alumni
  • Advise students regarding experiential learning opportunities, including identifying and approaching potential host sites.
  • In conjunction with Alumni Relations, facilitate alumni networking and mentorship opportunities for current students and share information regarding alumni engagement. Build and maintain relationships with alumni.
  • Oversee and coordinate outreach to students through direct emails and regular newsletters.
  • Reach out to all students assigned to you at least once a school year.

Programming and Materials

  • Develop, plan and execute programming and events
  • Develop and maintain job search resources and materials, such as tip sheets, job postings, and networking opportunities.
  • Create and manage tools for alumni and students with more complex advising needs.

Employer Outreach

  • Stay informed on employment opportunities and career paths to advise applicants effectively.
  • Build and maintain relationships with potential employers.
  • Coordinate with externship hosts to conduct externship vetting in a timely manner, communicate with externship coordinator, and maintain externship records.
  • Identify past externship host sites and coordinate with externship supervisor as needed to facilitate additional externship opportunities.

Leadership

  • Mentor and coach peers regarding application materials review and current market trends in hiring practices.
  • Assist with new peer onboarding
  • Partner with the program administrator to optimize software workflows and ensure adherence to established processes across the program.
  • Provide input, evaluate, and make recommendations regarding the effectiveness of career counseling processes, programs, and services.
  • Assist with data gathering for the ABA and other organizations' reporting.
  • Develop collaborative relationships with student organizations to share relevant information and resources.
  • Engage with MHSL faculty to share information regarding department services and events.
  • Assist career advisors with complex and unique advising needs
  • Identify students' needs and areas for improvement in advising, resources, and programming. Create a strategy to strengthen.
  • Perform other projects and tasks as department needs require.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, especially those in the areas of collaboration, conflict resolution, problem solving and decision making; strong organization and planning skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and constituents.
  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse student and alumni population.
  • Ability to work well without close supervision.
  • Strong general written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to work occasional nights and weekends as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Counseling, Higher Education or related field
  • 5 years of experience in recruitment, counseling or advising, preferably within a law school or other educational setting; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated skills in career development advising.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctor
  • Considerable knowledge of legal education and the legal profession.

 

Pay Range

The anticipate salary range for this position is $58,000 - $81,000 per year, depending on qualifications.
