Role Description
We are seeking a Consumer/Mortgage Underwriter to support our credit union’s mission of providing responsible, member-focused lending solutions. This role is responsible for underwriting consumer and residential mortgage loans in accordance with credit union policies, regulatory requirements, and sound lending practices. Experience working with or alongside loan servicing functions is valued, as it supports thoughtful credit decisions and long-term portfolio performance.
The ideal candidate demonstrates solid underwriting judgment, understands the full loan lifecycle, and is committed to supporting members through fair, consistent, and compliant lending decisions.
Qualifications
Required:
- 2–5 years of experience underwriting consumer and/or residential mortgage loans
- Working knowledge of consumer lending and mortgage underwriting guidelines
- Experience with FNMA and FHLMC automated underwriting systems
- Familiarity with loan servicing functions such as payment processing, escrow administration, delinquencies, and member account maintenance
- Strong ability to analyze financial documents and assess credit risk
- Experience using loan origination and underwriting systems
- Solid written and verbal communication skills
- Strong attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple files simultaneously
Preferred:
- Experience working in a credit union environment, but not necessary
- Knowledge of conventional and government-backed mortgage products (FHA, VA, etc.)
- Prior exposure to loan servicing, post-closing, or collections functions
- College degree in finance, business, or a related field
- Understanding of credit union philosophy and member service principles
Key Responsibilities:
- Underwrite consumer and residential mortgage loan applications in accordance with credit union policies, risk tolerances, and regulatory standards
- Analyze credit reports, income documentation, assets, liabilities, and collateral to assess borrower creditworthiness
- Underwrite first mortgages, refinances, home equity, and consumer loan products as assigned
- Apply consistent credit judgment to approve, condition, suspend, or decline loan requests within assigned authority levels
- Communicate clearly with loan officers, processors, and servicing staff to resolve conditions and underwriting questions
- Leverage loan servicing knowledge to evaluate payment history trends, escrow requirements, delinquency risk, and post-closing implications
- Ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations, including Fair Lending, ECOA, TILA, RESPA, and credit union policies
- Maintain clear, accurate documentation of underwriting decisions within the loan origination system
- Support quality control reviews, internal audits, and ongoing policy or guideline updates
- Provide input and feedback to lending leadership on underwriting trends and potential opportunities for improvement
