Job Duties:

Under general supervision, this position exists to perform tasks related to grounds keeping, landscaping, general cleaning, and minor building and furniture repair to provide a clean, comfortable, healthy, and safe environment for all who work in or visit MnDOT owned and maintained buildings, structures, and outdoor areas. This position performs lawn mowing and grounds work in the summer and assists with snow removal of the headquarters facility in the winter. This position completes conference room set up and performs a portion of the cleaning duties as needed. This position is also responsible for painting, wall repairs, and minor furniture repair. The position reports from 12:00pm-8:30pm Monday-Friday and is responsible for lock up of the facility at the end of the day.

Minimum Qualifications

To qualify, General Maintenance Worker applicants must meet all the following:

Knowledge of:

  • Different types of flooring/floor covering sufficient to determine proper methods of maintenance and appropriate cleaning methods, materials, agents, and equipment.
  • Chemical cleaning agents such as ammonia, bleaches, scouring agents and soaps sufficient to appropriately select the agent(s), handle and apply, and dispose of safely.
  • Methods, tools, and equipment used in maintenance sufficient to use effectively and operate safely and to make minor repairs.

Ability to:

  • Maintain physical health and endurance sufficient to perform work functions.
  • Follow simple oral and written instructions.
  • Perform assigned tasks with limited work direction.
  • Keep simple records.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge and application of basic math (add, subtract, multiply and divide).
  • Knowledge of grounds-keeping and horticultural practices sufficient to properly care for flowers, plants, trees, shrubs and lawns; to recognize plant diseases and pests and to take corrective action for control of them.
  • Skills in the use of hand and power tools sufficient to build, construct and install modular office furniture.
  • Skills in servicing basic power, hand tools and grounds keeping equipment.
  • Ability to perform and direct painting and surface preparation of interior and exterior building surfaces.
  • Skills to operate lawn maintenance equipment and snow removal equipment.

Additional Requirements
