Position Description
As the Community Science Support Intern, you’ll assist the Water Quality team in coordinating our community volunteers and water quality monitoring programs. We value our volunteers as they share our passion and serve as the eyes and ears of our waterways. You’ll help to keep that excitement alive, build relationships, and facilitate training opportunities. The primary focus of this position will be implementing baseline, winter road salt, and freshwater mussel monitoring programs. However, the coordinator will help facilitate other volunteer-based programs and projects, as needed.
Your work is an important piece of our organization and is part of something much bigger. Ultimately, the data our team and volunteers collect provides science-based evidence for policymakers and land management choices.
Responsibilities
- Train, coordinate, and support water quality community scientists
- Support volunteer monitors through phone, email, and in-person communications
- Track and maintain all monitoring information using Excel, Salesforce, and the WI Department of Natural Resources’ SWIMS platforms
- Prepare, maintain, and distribute water quality monitoring equipment
- Coordinate and perform site visit checks with volunteers
- Help and support volunteers input data into the appropriate databases
- Create and share monitoring reports for volunteers
- Collect water quality data throughout the Milwaukee River Basin
- Assist the Volunteer Coordinator in volunteer recognition and appreciation programs
- Manage water quality interns as necessary
- Work with our Science & Restoration Manager to streamline existing monitoring programs
- Assist with special projects, including freshwater mussel monitoring and the Meijer robot project

Qualifications
The successful candidate may have the following qualifications:
- Associate degree or higher preferred, or equivalent experience
- Excellent written and verbal skills, experience working with volunteers is a plus
- Passion for science communication
- Ability to resolve routine problems and work independently
- Ability to prioritize work according to the organization’s needs
- Strong attention to detail and interpersonal skills
- Knowledge of basic software including Microsoft and Google products
- Commitment to the environment
- Valid driver’s license
Physical Requirements
- Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer
- Must be able to lift 20 pounds at times, including moving equipment
- Fieldwork to include wading in rivers and streams with uneven and rocky bottoms in a variety of weather conditions
