What are the responsibilities and job description for the Sunday Children's Ministry Teacher position at Midway United Methodist Church?
Position Purpose
The Children’s Ministry Teacher helps create a safe, joyful, and welcoming environment for children from infancy through 5th grade. This role supports families and the ministry of Midway UMC by offering dependable, nurturing care and positive engagement so children feel loved, valued, and excited to be at church.
Reports To
Director of Children and Family Ministries
Typical Schedule
- Sundays: 8:15 AM – 12:30 PM
- Additional hours may be available for special events and programs
Key Responsibilities
- Provide attentive, age-appropriate care for children from infants through elementary age, including feeding, diapering, bathroom assistance, supervision, and emotional support
- Engage children with warmth and enthusiasm through play, crafts, stories, games, and prayer
- Help create a positive, safe, and inclusive environment where every child feels welcome
- Greet children and families with kindness and communicate respectfully with parents, volunteers, and staff
- Ensure children are released only to approved adults listed on the child’s registration form
- Respond calmly and appropriately in emergency situations and notify parents and the Director of Children and Family Ministries as needed
- Maintain clean, organized, and inviting ministry spaces by straightening rooms and sanitizing toys and surfaces after use
- Communicate concerns, incidents, or needs promptly with the Director of Children and Family Ministries
- Notify the Director of Children and Family Ministries of:
- Planned absences at least two weeks in advance
- Unplanned absences at least two hours prior to a scheduled shift - Three (3) un-paid Sundays allowed absent per calendar year
Requirements & Qualifications
- Must submit to and pass a background check upon hire and annually thereafter
- Ability to work Sundays and occasional holidays or special events
- Reliable, patient, and caring with a heart for serving children and families
- Comfortable supervising children across multiple developmental stages
Preferred Experience
- Childcare or children’s ministry experience
- Teaching or classroom experience (a plus)
Job Type: Part-time
Pay: $15.75 per hour
