Job Title: Deaf Interpreter
Reports to: Director of Special Education

Primary Purpose:
The Interpreter provides interpreting services for hearing impaired students in a variety of educational settings. This individual works as part of a collaborative team to facilitate communication and support for students with hearing impairments.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
High school diploma or GED
Valid certification as interpreter granted by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf or Texas Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing
Special Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
Knowledge of interpreter role and Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf Code of Professional Conduct
Experience working with individuals with varied language abilities
An understanding of Deaf culture and the Deaf community
Ability to write routine reports and correspondence
Ability to work collaboratively with teachers and support staff
Experience:
Some experience working in a public school setting
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Instructional Support
1. Interpret in educational settings including classrooms, co-curricular activities, school-related programs and meetings, conferences, staff development, and other situations.
2. Attend and interpret Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) Committee meetings as needed.
3. Help maintain administrative records and prepare required reports.
Student Management
4. Assume responsibility for learning and adapting to each student’s communication needs.
5. Keep teacher informed of special needs and provide consultation regarding communication strategies and accessibility needs.

6. Maintain confidentiality.
7. Participate in professional development programs and special events as assigned.

Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment including personal computer and peripherals.
Posture: May require standing, moving, or positioning for extended periods.
Motion: Ability to use hands and arms for extended periods for signing

Environment: Schedule may include evenings or extracurricular activities as needed
Mental Demands: Ability to attend and actively engage for prolonged periods
