Job Title: Teacher of Students with Visual Impairments
Reports to: Director of Special Education
Dept./School: Special Education Department

Primary Purpose:
Assess students to determine educational need for the instructional services related to vision. For eligible students, prepare individualized service plans and provide consultative and/or direct services to eliminate or reduce problems or impairments that interfere with a student’s ability to receive educational benefit from his/her Individual Education Plan (IEP).


Qualifications:


Education/Certification:
Bachelor's degree and certification for Teacher of Students with Visual Impairments.


Special Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
Understands and applies knowledge of the characteristics and needs of students with visual impairments, including those with additional disabilities
Understands and applies knowledge of formal and informal assessments and evaluations and knows how to use resulting data and other information to make service and programming recommendations and to participate in the development of students Individual Educational Programs
Understands and applies knowledge of strategies for planning instruction in the school, home, and community environments to facilitate student achievement
Knows how to promote students development of concepts and skills for academic achievement, social interaction, and independent living
Knows how to communicate and collaborate effectively in a variety of professional settings
Understands and applies knowledge of the foundations of the profession, including legal requirements and ethical considerations relating to students’ education, and actively seeks to expand professional knowledge and skills
Knows how to read contracted and uncontracted literary braille and Nemeth Code
Knows how to produce contracted and uncontracted literary braille and Nemeth Code
Ability to travel to multiple work locations as assigned
Calm and patient demeanor with students and others.


Experience:
Experience in public school setting preferred


Major Responsibilities and Duties:
1. Assess students with psychosocial, cognitive/perceptual, sensory processing impairments, and physical disabilities and determine eligibility for services.
2. Plan and provide direct and consultative services consistent with the student’s Individual Education Plans (IEP).
3. Participate in the Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) Committee regarding interpretation of assessment data, appropriate placement, and goal setting for students with visual disabilities according to district procedures.
4. Evaluate student progress and determine readiness for termination of instructional services for vision.

5. Design, construct, alter equipment, and provide students with adaptive equipment and devices to promote maximum independence.
6. Consult with educational staff regarding the use of specialized equipment, materials, and techniques.
7. Adapt or recommend adaptation of the school environment.
8. Consult with staff regarding the need for providing instructional materials to students with visual impairments well in advance of classroom instruction to allow for translation into braille.
9. Provide staff development training in assigned schools to assist school personnel in understanding students with visual impairments and adaptations that may be needed in the classroom setting.
10. Compose reports that meet established standards of practice and complete reports with specified timelines.
11. Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents as required by federal and state rules and regulations and district policy and procedures.
12. Comply with federal and state law, Commissioner’s Rules, and district policy and procedures.
13. Present a positive role model for students that support the mission of the school district.
14. Maintain a positive and effective relationship with supervisors.
15. Comply with all district and local campus routines and regulations.
16. Effectively communicate with colleagues, students, and parents.
17. Assess and respond to needs related to job responsibilities.
18. Coordinate with other agencies as needed for instructional materials translation into braille and Nemeth Code.
19. Assist in the selection of materials, equipment, and other adaptive materials.
20. Develop and maintain effective relationships with students and parents.
21. Consult with parents, teachers, administrators, and other relevant individuals to enhance their work with students.
22. Develop needed professional skills appropriate to job assignment.
23. Demonstrate behavior that is professional, ethical, and responsible.
24. Articulate the district's mission and goals in the area of the provision of vision services to the community and solicit its support in realizing the mission.
25. Demonstrate awareness of school-community needs and initiate activities to meet those identified needs.
26. Demonstrate the use of appropriate and effective techniques for community and parent involvement.
27. Complete all other duties as may be assigned.

Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment including personal computer and peripherals.
Posture: Moderate standing; occasional kneeling, squatting, bending, and stooping
Motion: Repetitive hand motions, frequent keyboarding and use of mouse; occasional reaching
Lifting: Occasional light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds)
Environment:May work prolonged or irregular hours
Mental Demands: Work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress
