What are the responsibilities and job description for the Learning Coach, Secondary position at Midland Public Schools?
MUST BE CERTIFIED AT THE SECONDARY LEVEL
This is a 1.0 FTE grant-funded position. The specific assignment/buildings are determined annually and ongoing renewal is based on funding availability. Placement will be at the secondary level.
SALARY RANGE: $47,547 - $102,907 (experienced based salary protection available)
DEADLINE: September 24, 2025 or until filled
JOB SUMMARY: Learning Coaches support the growth and professional learning of teachers, administrators, and the overall organization.
REPORTS TO: Building Administration and/or Curriculum Specialist
EVALUATION: As per the current Midland Public Schools policies and procedures
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Education:
- Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university, or equivalent, in the education field
- Valid Michigan teaching certificate at appropriate grade level for assignment
- Demonstrated Technical Skills:
- Computer knowledge and experience in Microsoft Office and Google Suite, and other basic computer skills
- Familiarity with student information systems
- Possess computer competency and familiarity with emerging technologies
- Ability to engage adults in learning and communicate pedagogical knowledge to staff of varied abilities, knowledge, and skill to build the capacity of the organization and skills for building strong collaborative relationships
- Experience Required:
- Consistent record of high student growth results and highly effective instructional practices
- Demonstrated experience/ability to execute the following competencies is required:
- Support the improvement of the implementation of Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) components in alignment with MDE’s MTSS Practice Profile with equity embedded in all components
- Support overall data-driven decision-making by gathering and using data to support teachers to identify whole child student needs and to identify strategies for student intervention
- Evaluate whether instructional strategies implemented are working, based on data
- Support collaborative structures at the district and building levels
- Build and sustain collaborative relationships with the principal and administration team, the building level teams, and the district
- Public Relations Skills: Ability to relate to school age children, parents, teachers, and members of the community
- Have a growth mindset
- Possess knowledge of the whole child model
- Demonstrate extensive knowledge of (MTSS)
- Possess the ability to analyze and interpret data and present it in a format that is easily understood
- Possess sound, independent judgment, including handling of confidential matters
- Ability to adapt to changes in plans or activities on short notice
- Pass background check
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Successfully complete district assigned trainings, per established deadlines – job specific training will be provided as available
- Organize and prioritize tasks to meet deadlines
- Maintain an organized environment
- Communicate effectively with students, staff, and parents, verbally and in writing, in a cohesive and accurate manner
- Work independently as well as with a team
- Support the philosophy and vision of the Midland Public Schools
- Facilitate training and provide modeling of best practices to meet the academic needs of students in the classroom and to meet desired outcomes
- Support data-driven decision-making throughout the system – this includes providing feedback to teachers as they gather data about students, analyze it, and use it to plan and implement instruction for continuous improvement
- Support the organization and teachers with the continued enhancement of effective instruction within MTSS
- Engage in coaching cycles with individual or small groups of teachers; this includes observing, co-planning, modeling, co-teaching, conferring, and analyzing data
- Guide educators in the selection and implementation of assessments
- Collaborate with staff and administrators to make data-informed decisions
- Participate in initiatives focused on the desired outcomes, as identified by the District Continuous Improvement Plan in alignment with the Michigan Integrated Continuous Improvement Process (MICIP)
- Meet and collaborate regularly with Curriculum Specialists, Principals, and other district coaches to ensure alignment on work with MICIP goals and outcomes
- Plan and facilitate staff development meetings on a variety of teaching and learning strategies
- Create and facilitate learning experiences for new teachers as a part of the onboarding process
- Maintain a feedback loop including giving and receiving feedback for growth and improvement; prioritize new and less than effective staff
- Engage in professional learning to strengthen expertise and to identify strategies for the development of solutions
- Develop and nurture collaborative relationships and an overall safe environment where teachers feel comfortable to try new strategies and approaches
- Maintain accurate records related to services provided in a coaching log
- Provide professional development and collaborative opportunities for support staff
- Remain current with research and practices related to effective instruction and coaching
- Participate fully in building and district-level professional development
- Provide support and guidance on selecting and implementing effective instructional materials and resources
- Foster a collaborative culture with shared responsibilities among educators via collaborative planning meetings and the Professional Learning Community (PLC) process
- Work with educators to analyze student achievement data to identify trends, strengths, and areas of improvement
- Support educators as they set data-driven goals and strategies to improve student learning outcomes
- Support administrators in designing, implementing, facilitating, and evaluating professional development aligned to the district’s mission, goals, and instructional priorities
- Fine motor skills and ability to lift up to 50 pounds unassisted, to lift and move equipment and supplies
- Able to stand or sit for long periods of time (up to entire shift as tasks require), as well as stoop, squat, bend, crouch, reach, kneel, and climb stairs frequently during the shift
- Able to ride in a vehicle, as necessary (e.g., training on occasion)
- Able to work indoors during all seasons/weather/temperatures as permitted
ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS:
- Communicate effectively via district-assigned email on a daily basis as determined by supervisor
- Accurately complete electronic time sheets and absence reporting via time keeping system, per assigned deadlines
- Regular and reliable attendance
- Consistent and reliable performance of job responsibilities
- Perform other job responsibilities deemed appropriate by the supervisor/building administrator and/or Superintendent
