Founded in 1946, Midland Community Theatre (MCT) is dedicated to delivering exceptional theatre arts experiences and educational opportunities to the community of Midland and the greater Permian Basin. Each season, MCT produces a variety of 10-12 high-quality shows and offers arts education programs for local youth. Additionally, the theatre provides accessible facility and costume rentals to support creative endeavors. Role Description

The Technical Director (TD) is responsible for overseeing all technical and production elements for the theatre’s season. This includes the construction, installation, and assisting in the maintenance of scenic, lighting, sound, projection, and stage systems. The TD ensures safe, efficient, and timely execution of all productions while upholding the organization’s artistic vision and commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion. The ideal candidate is a collaborative leader with strong technical skills, excellent communication abilities, and a passion for creating meaningful theatre in a nonprofit environment.

Responsibilities 

Technical & Production Operations 

● Oversee all technical aspects of productions, including scenery, props, lighting, sound, and 

special effects. 

● Coordinate and schedule technical rehearsals, load-ins, strikes, and maintenance. 

● Create technical drawings and construction plans operating within budget. 

● Supervise construction, installation, and operation of technical elements. 


Leadership & Collaboration 

● Work closely with directors, designers, foreman, stage managers, and production staff. 

● Train and supervise technical crew, over-hire labor, and volunteers. 

● Facilitate clear communication across artistic and production teams. 

Budgeting & Resource Management 

● Manage production budgets in collaboration with staff Designers. 

● Oversee purchasing, rentals, and inventory of materials and equipment. 

● Maintain workshop, theatre spaces, and storage areas. 

Safety & Compliance 

● Ensure all work follows industry best practices, OSHA guidelines, and theatre safety protocols. 

● Provide training in safe tool usage and backstage procedures. 


Qualifications 

Required 

● Proven experience as a Technical Director, Master Carpenter, or similar role in theatre production. 

● Strong skills in scenic construction, rigging, lighting, and/or sound. 

● Ability to read and create technical drawings (AutoCAD, Vectorworks, or similar). 

● Experience managing budgets and timelines. 

● Strong organizational and communication skills. 

● Ability to lift 50lbs and work at heights when necessary. 


Preferred 

● Experience in a nonprofit or community-focused organization. 

● Knowledge of projection/video systems. 

● Familiarity with ETC lighting systems and QLab. 

● Commitment to equity, accessibility, and inclusive practices. 

Compensation & Benefits 

● Salary Range: $48,000 - 55,000 commensurate with experience. 

● Benefits include health insurance including option for spouse and dependants, PTO, professional 

development, complimentary tickets, and a 3% retirement match.
