Job Summary
Position Summary: The Transportation Safety and Training Specialist is responsible for overseeing the training and certifying new and existing bus drivers to ensure safe and efficient transportation of students. This position will work closely with the Transportation Department leadership to develop and implement comprehensive training programs, conduct classroom instruction, and provide hands-on training feedback in a variety of driving conditions. In addition this position will serve as the district's 3rd Party CDL Examiner.
Essential Functions:
- Develop, implement, and maintain a comprehensive bus driver training program that meets all State and Federal regulations.
- Conduct classroom instruction on topics such as:
- Safe driving practices
- Defensive driving techniques
- Emergency procedures
- Student management
- Special education transportation
- Provide hands on, behind-the-wheel training in various driving conditions, including:
- Urban and rural routes
- Inclement weather conditions
- Night driving
- Evaluate driver performance and provide feedback to improve driving skills and safety practices, including contracted testing.
- Maintain accurate records of driver training, certifications, and performance evaluations, including maintaining an efficient record-retention system.
- Stay current on State and Federal regulations related to school bus driver training.
- Monitor fuel system, including State testing.
- Assist with the development and implementation of transportation policies and procedures.
- Collaborate with the Transportation Department to address driver concerns and improve training and professional development programs.
- Performs all other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with 2 years experience in a Class B vehicle.
Strong instructional and communication skills. Ability to effectively train and evaluate drivers.
- Knowledge of State and Federal regulations governing school bus operations.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Previous experience as a bus driver trainer.
- Previous experience as a DOT Third Party CDL Examiner.
- Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements .
- Proven experience as a school bus driver.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Education: High School Diploma or equivalency.
- Licensing: Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements: Required for operating a school bus.
- DOT Physical Certification: Required to meet federal health and safety standards for commercial drivers.
- Safe Driving Record: No more than two moving violations in the past three years.
- Attention to Detail: Ability to follow route instructions, adhere to traffic laws, and maintain a safe driving record.
- Customer Service: Ability to interact professionally with drivers, students, parents, and school staff.
- Physical Fitness: Ability to lift heavy objects, bend, stoop, and sit for extended periods.
Working Conditions: This job is performed primarily inside the transportation office, transportation bus barn, or District-owned vehicle.
