Job Description:
Title: Physics Lab Technician
Unit: Part-Time Non-Unit Staff
Department: Science
Reports to: Dean of STEM
Date: December 10, 2025
General Summary: The part-time physics lab technician provides technical support services to faculty and staff who teach Physics courses on the Lowell and Bedford Campuses and maintains a sanitary and efficient laboratory environment to promote student success. This knowledgeable individual performs administrative and laboratory work and includes maintaining inventory of laboratory equipment, materials and supplies, ordering new/replacement materials, maintaining/caring for laboratory equipment, setting up laboratory experiments and related equipment/supplies for labs, and ensuring laboratory safety and proper disposal of any hazardous wastes.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Prepares materials and sets up all laboratory experiments and demonstrations in the Physics area accurately and on time.
- Dismantles laboratory experiments and demonstrations, checks and returns equipment to storage in a timely manner.
- Maintains the order, cleanliness, and safety of the laboratories and storage facilities.
- Initiates orders for new/replacement supplies and equipment for Physics with the approval of the department chair.
- Receives/stocks orders and processes receiving/invoicing documentation
- Adjusts, maintains, calibrates and performs minor repairs to equipment using basic electronics skills; reports major repair needs or arranges for repairs according to established procedures.
- Constructs and modifies apparatus as required. Improves on existing experiments and designs new experiments and equipment as needed.
- Installs physics lab software, periodically updates lab computers and maintains interfaces, sensors and probes.
- Maintains appropriate records for all purchase orders for orders and repair work on equipment.
- Maintains an inventory of all supplies, materials and equipment, ensuring availability of supplies to perform laboratory activities.
- Provides assistance or instruction to faculty in use of science equipment as needed.
- Responsible for safety protocols. Conducts the proper disposal of all laboratory waste, including biohazardous material, coordinating with college Environmental Health and Safety Officer.
- Performs administrative tasks associated with department activities such as lists, inventory reports, disposal records, service contracts, reports, forms, general correspondence, material safety data sheets, product information, and laboratory manuals,
- Interacts with various agencies/individuals to coordinate activities, reviews status of work, exchanges information, or resolves problems.
- Follows OSHA safety procedures and maintain files of current MSDS sheets.
- Collaborates with other science technicians to ensure appropriate disposal of waste.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Dean of STEM or the Science Department Chair
Requirements:
High school diploma, GED, or equivalent
Some experience working a lab setting
Additional Information:
Salary Range: $24.50 per hour in accordance with the Middlesex Community College Part-Time Wage Schedule
Location: Bedford and Lowell campus
Hours: Up to 18.5 hours per week, schedule to be determined upon hire
Expected Start Date: February 2026
