POSITION SUMMARY
The ER Clerk is responsible for providing clerical support for the hospital for patients presenting to the ER and processing all registrations for ER services, including inpatient and outpatient services and obtaining accurate and complete information. The clerk completes verification of insurance as well as collects patient share after triage and medical intervention when an emergency medical condition exists per EMTALA. Acknowledges and responds appropriately to the hospital’s customer relations philosophy, including the five fundamentals of the AIDET program.
% OF TIME POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES
80% 1. The ER clerk will process the ER registration, obtain accurate and complete patient demographic and insurance information and update all current information accurately into the EMR. When a medical screening has been completed by the ER MD and the ER MD has determined a patient’s condition to be non-emergent, the ER Clerk will collect patient share due for service per policy. The ER Clerk will collect all ER co-pays as defined by a patient’s insurance card or insurance company. This will be collected after triage and after medical intervention when an emergency medical condition exists per EMTALA.
20% 2. Supports and promotes excellence in customer/guest relations. Demonstrates patient centered, patient valued behaviors. Communicates effectively and works collaboratively with coworkers and Business Office to ensure completeness and accurateness of all information.
3. Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Education and Experience High school graduate or equivalent.
Physical Demands: Must be able to work twelve (12) hours, prolonged, extensive, or considerable standing/walking. Lift supplies weighing less than 25 pounds; push patients in a wheelchair weighing up to 200 pounds.
Work Conditions: Must be flexible, regularly scheduled 12 hour shifts including some weekends. Regularly exposed to risk of bloodborne diseases. Contact with patients under wide variety of circumstances. Exposed to unpleasant elements (accidents, injuries and illness). Handles emergency crisis situations. Occasionally subjected to irregular hours. Morning scheduled personnel are to arrive by 6:45am, and the evening scheduled personnel are to arrive by 18:45 (6:45 pm).
