A Millwork Technician in a lumber yard (sometimes called a Shop Carpenter or Pre-Hung Door Assembler) is a skilled tradesperson responsible for the precision fabrication and assembly of "value-added" building products. While a yard worker moves bulk lumber, the technician transforms raw materials into finished units like custom doors, window frames, and interior trim packages.
Responsibilities
- Precision Assembly: Building "pre-hung" interior and exterior door units, ensuring jambs are square and hinges are perfectly recessed.
- Machine Operation: Safely operating specialized shop machinery, including door machines (e.g., Norfield or Kval), table saws, miter saws, pneumatic nailers, and industrial routers.
- Machining & Boring: Drilling and mortising for locksets, deadbolts, and specialty hardware based on contractor specifications or architectural "door schedules."
- Quality Control: Inspecting wood slabs and trim for defects, warping, or grade inconsistencies before assembly to prevent job site "call-backs."
- Custom Modifications: Cutting down door heights, ripping jamb widths, and fabricating custom sills or specialty moldings for non-standard openings.
- Staging & Loading: Carefully wrapping finished units in protective materials and labeling them for specific delivery routes or "will-call" pickups.
Qualifications
- Carpentry Mastery: Deep understanding of "reveal" gaps, "handing" (left-hand vs. right-hand swings), and wood-joining techniques.
- Blueprint Literacy: Ability to read and interpret complex door and window schedules with 100% accuracy.
- Mathematical Precision: Ability to measure to the 1/16th of an inch and calculate "rough openings" versus "unit dimensions."
- Physical Stamina: Capability to lift and maneuver heavy exterior or solid-core fire doors (often 75-100 lbs) throughout a shift.
- Safety Mindset: Strict adherence to OSHA standards for eye/ear protection and machine guarding in a high-dust environment.
Experience
- Experience: 1-3 years in finish carpentry, cabinet making, or a dedicated door shop. Experience with residential framing is also highly valued.
- Education: High School Diploma required; vocational training in woodworking or construction technology is a major plus.
