The Position
Reporting to the Senior Vice President & General Manager of Services, the Director of Business Development is responsible for leading Microbiologics’ expansion efforts across the U.S. and EU marketplace. The Director of Business Development will be a strategic, results-driven leader with a strong track record in biotech, diagnostics, and Contract Research Organization (CRO) service sales and will have a passion for growing key accounts.
Key responsibilities:
- Drive the development and execution of business development strategies within the U.S. and EU markets.
- Identify, establish, and expand relationships with key corporate accounts for direct product and service sales in the biopharmaceutical, diagnostics, food, medical device, and cosmetic laboratory sectors.
- Lead and mentor a high-performing sales team to achieve individual and company revenue targets with a focus on key account management methodology.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with internal departments to align sales initiatives with broader business goals, marketing, and operational strategies.
- Support company-wide strategic account planning, sales protocols, and process improvement efforts.
- Ensure strict adherence to all regulatory mandates and maintain compliance with both national and international standards.
- Represent the company with professionalism and excellence, providing exceptional customer service to clients at all levels.
Candidate Profile
Microbiologics’ Director of Business Development has an exceptional opportunity to build upon the company’s history of growth and innovation by capitalizing on services and market expansion while growing revenue and value. This is a significant opportunity for an experienced Director who has developed untapped markets and driven operational excellence, sales, and profits in a complex industry environment.
This key leadership position requires 10 or more years of progressive experience in life science, CRO, medical device, or service-related industries with progressive, multi-functional experience. A background in virology, biotechnology science, pharmaceuticals, or cosmetic lab services is preferred. Government or federal sales experience is also preferred, along with knowledge of FDA, GMP, ISO, or other relevant regulatory frameworks. Experience in cell and gene therapy, viral manufacturing, and/or infectious disease is a plus.
The right candidate will be a leader strong in vision and strategy as well as organizational development and talent recruiting. Qualified candidates will possess a background in sales, marketing, business development, or operations. The successful candidate will likely be technically oriented and inclined to maximize his or her contribution to the company. An undergraduate degree in engineering, biological sciences, business, marketing, finance, or a related field is required; an advanced degree is desired.
Exceptional leadership skills are essential, and experience in a regulated industry or a business model similar to Microbiologics’ is a definite advantage. Corporate development or M&A experience is desirable. Additionally, this individual must have the capacity to collaborate with other executives in the Granite community, taking advantage of available resources and becoming an integral part of the overall leadership team.

Location
For the Director of Business Development role, we are open to a hybrid model with committed time at the San Diego, California; Kalamazoo, Michigan; or St. Cloud, Minnesota offices. Up to 40% travel is required, including travel to the Microbiologics’ offices, distributors, key customers, key suppliers, trade shows, and relevant meetings.
Compensation & Benefits
We offer a competitive base salary in the $155,000 to $185,000 range, based on experience and qualifications, along with an annual bonus and the opportunity to participate in long-term incentives, including a stock appreciation rights (SARs) program.
