Fraternity & Sorority Life Coordinator
Position Summary
The Coordinator for Fraternity and Sorority Life is a full-time professional staff member within the Division of Student Affairs. This position provides leadership and support to enhance the success and growth of the Fraternity and Sorority Life (FSL) community at Michigan State University. The Coordinator will work closely with student leaders, advisors, inter/national organizations, and campus partners to achieve shared goals and foster a thriving fraternity and sorority community.
Key Responsibilities
Advising
- Serve as the primary advisor to the Interfraternity Council (IFC), providing guidance and leadership development support to council officers and the IFC chapters.
- Support chapter and council leaders through regular meetings, coaching, and training focused on organizational management, member development, accountability, and values-based leadership.
- Assist chapters in navigating university policies, inter/national organization expectations, and risk management standards in collaboration with Student Support & Accountability and campus partners.
- Lead the design and implementation of a comprehensive, lifecycle-based leadership education framework for the fraternity and sorority community, spanning pre-joining, new member, active member, and senior-year engagement.
- Coordinate and facilitate pre-joining education initiatives, including implementation of Tightrope training and other required experiences for prospective and newly joining students.
- Develop and implement a community-wide new member orientation or educational program that brings together students across chapters to reinforce shared values, expectations, and community standards.
- Integrate career readiness, professional skill development, and post-graduate preparation into leadership education and programming in alignment with institutional priorities, including NACE competencies.
- Plan and execute large-scale community events and initiatives, including Safe Halloween and the Fraternity and Sorority Life Awards, in collaboration with council leadership, campus, and community partners.
- Support IFC-led programs and initiatives that promote leadership development, health and safety, community engagement, and academic success.
- Ensure programs and events reflect inclusive practices, support student learning outcomes, and align with departmental and university goals.
- Coordinate fraternity and sorority life-related engagement for prospective students and families, including contributions to admissions events, orientation programs, and informational outreach.
- Serve as a resource to families and supporters by providing education on fraternity and sorority life values, expectations, and student support structures, as appropriate.
- Collaborate with campus partners to ensure consistent messaging and positive representation of the fraternity and sorority community in recruitment and outreach efforts.
- Work collaboratively with Fraternity and Sorority Life staff to ensure consistency and alignment across councils, policies, educational initiatives, and student support strategies.
- Maintain effective communication with chapter advisors, inter/national organizations, alumni, and campus partners regarding chapter operations, programming, and leadership development.
- Represent Fraternity and Sorority Life on university committees, task forces, and working groups as assigned.
- Develop and implement assessment tools to evaluate leadership education initiatives, events, and student learning outcomes.
- Maintain accurate records related to council activities, programs, and participation.
- Use assessment data to inform continuous improvement of educational programs and community initiatives.
- Maintains current knowledge of applicable laws, regulations, and policies related to fraternities and sororities and risk management.
- Develops and maintains collaborative partnerships across Student Affairs, Residential Education and Housing Services, Inclusive Access and Belonging, Prevention Outreach and Education, University Health and Wellbeing, Police and Public Safety, City of East Lansing, and other relevant units.
- Represents the department on committees, workgroups, and university initiatives.
- Participates in professional development opportunities, retreats, trainings, and community-specific continuing education.
- This position offers occasional hybrid flexibility based on departmental needs.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Associate Director for Fraternity and Sorority Life.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a bachelor’s degree in Social Science, Education, Business, Liberal Arts, or a related field.
- At least one to three years of progressively responsible experience working with college students, programming, and student leadership development, particularly in fraternity and sorority life.
- Experience with health and safety programming or similar initiatives.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and foster an inclusive environment.
- Or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Desired Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in Higher Education, Student Affairs, College Student Personnel, or a related field.
- Affiliation with a fraternity/sorority
- Proficiency in assessment methods and data-driven decision-making.
