As a community builder, you’ll inspire students to be partners in creating a vibrant and welcoming Jewish community on ten campuses statewide. You will drive Hillel forward by thinking big and implementing with excellence on a day to day basis.

In this role, you will bring your contagious energy and creativity directly to the students, engaging one-on-one with previously uninvolved participants, supervising student boards and interns and working directly with those students to create dynamic Jewish student life across the state of Michigan. You will work with our team to create and implement a comprehensive engagement strategy to reach the estimated 1,500 Jewish students on our ten campuses.

The Hillel Campus Alliance of Michigan is a coalition of campus Hillels located throughout Michigan. HCAM is building dynamic and vibrant Jewish communities for students at Alma College, Albion College, Central Michigan University, Eastern Michigan University, Grand Valley State University, Kalamazoo College, Michigan Technological University, Northern Michigan University, Saginaw Valley State University, and Western Michigan University. We prove that Jewish student life exists outside of a traditional Hillel building, providing nurturing environments for students to grow religiously, socially and ethically. We encourage a love for Israel and focus on creating an open and welcoming community for all Jews, with respect for other faiths and a broad understanding of what it means to be Jewish.

What You’ll Do

  • Develop one-on-one relationships with Jewish students by meeting them where they live, work and/or study, utilizing creative methods to reach and connect them to Jewish life.
  • Serve as an advisor for a number of our Hillels across Michigan.
  • Supervise and mentor student leaders and support them in creating meaningful peer-to-peer engagement initiatives and programming.
  • Collaborate with students and staff in planning and implementing a diverse range of programs, including Shabbat and holiday celebrations, social events, social justice initiatives, and Jewish learning opportunities.
  • Identify, connect with, and engage students to provide access to impactful Jewish experiences and foster a sense of belonging.

On a day to day basis you will

  • Lead and mentor student leaders: Plan and facilitate weekly virtual meetings with student boards, providing guidance, support, and supervision to foster their leadership development.
  • Engage students in person: Travel to campuses 2–3 days per week for coffee chats, program participation, and relationship-building with students.
  • Collaborate with the HCAM team: Meet weekly with colleagues to design and implement meaningful opportunities that help students connect, grow, and thrive in Jewish life.
  • Create and share Social Media content: Develop engaging HCAM social media content to highlight programs, events, and student stories.
  • Support student opportunities: Recruit and encourage students to participate in Birthright Israel trips and HCAM fellowship programs.

What You’ve Accomplished

  • 0-3 years professional work experience.
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • This is an in-person role location based in East Lansing, MI. Remote work is not available for this position.
  • Strong entrepreneurial spirit. Things may not always go according to plan and you must be willing to take risks and learn from your wins as well as your losses.
  • Comfort working independently.
  • Ability to collaborate and work with a team.
  • Creative problem-solving.
  • Confidence initiating and running programs, and comfort asking questions.
  • This position requires regular operation of a motor vehicle to travel independently to campuses. A company vehicle will be provided for all required travel to campuses. Must hold a valid drivers license.
