Director of Secondary Special Education
The Director of Secondary Special Education is a position within the Teaching and Learning Department responsible for leadership of Special Education and other support services in the Novi Community School District. The primary focus is grades 7-12, and this director coordinates efforts with the director responsible for grades K-6. This position acts as an instructional leader for building principals, providing oversight and direction for schools across the district for special education and Section 504. This position ensures program integration with other Teaching and Learning divisions and other District departments, Oakland Schools, its constituent local educational agencies, and the Michigan Department of Education. This position ensures compliance with Special Education Laws, Rules, Regulations, Acts, and Codes (State and Federal). The Director of Secondary Special Education reports to the Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Master’s Degree or equivalent with valid teaching certificate (at least one endorsement in special education)
- Special Education Director Approval (preferred) or meet temporary approval, with the ability to obtain full approval within 2 years.
- Three years of successful professional practice or administrative experience in special education preferred
- Excellent communication and leadership skills
- Experience in staff development/mentoring/training
- Knowledge of State and Federal special education rules and regulations
- Ability to oversee department budget and finances
- Ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality
RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES
- In conjunction with the Director of Elementary Special Education, oversee, coordinate, and manage the day-to-day Special Education programming for students with disabilities
- Assist in overseeing and guiding the work of the Special Education Supervisor, Coordinators, and administrative support staff to ensure efficient workflow, compliance, and high-quality service to students and families.
- Assist in the recruitment, selection, evaluation, and overall personnel management of special education staff
- Oversee ancillary staff (i.e., speech pathologists, psychologists, ) who provide related services to identified students
- Complete State and Federal reports as required and keep informed of all legal requirements governing special education and student support services
- Collaborate with building principals in supervising special education teachers and student support staff responsible for the implementation and coordination of the district’s special education services
- Assure that the Individualized Education Plan (IEP) of each pupil is developed and implemented, and all pupil-related meetings are conducted in compliance with state and federal law, including timelines
- Participate in the development and ongoing monitoring of programs and services to ensure implementation of IEP-related services and programs to meet the needs of students with
- Work collaboratively with parents, students, and district staff to support the needs of all students
- Assist with coordinating the transportation needs of students with disabilities
- Oversee and coordinate services for all students who may qualify under Section 504
- Manage department staff, budget, and finances
- Recommend policies and programs essential to meet the needs of students with disabilities
- Understand professional learning community (PLC) concepts and assist in the development of a district MTSS process
- Provide oversight and leadership for state special education complaints, OCR complaints, and related compliance matters, including coordination of investigations, corrective actions, and communication with stakeholders.
- Collaborate with staff to connect parents and caregivers with district and community supports that promote understanding, engagement, and successful participation in their child’s educational
- Ensure district adherence to LRE requirements by providing staff support, professional development, and guidance on inclusive service delivery and placement decisions.
- Maintain and grow professional capacity by attending meetings, in-services, conferences, and workshops and by participating in professional organizations
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning
