We're partnering with a leading engineering firm supporting major utilities and renewable developers across the Pacific Northwest. With a rapidly growing portfolio of grid modernization, EHV expansion, and renewable interconnection projects, they are seeking a Senior Substation Engineer to take on a technical leadership role.This position focuses on the design, oversight, and delivery of HV/EHV substation projects ranging from 69kV up to 500kV, including complex transmission-level infrastructure and critical grid upgrades. You'll serve as a technical lead and subject matter expert, guiding design standards, reviewing engineering deliverables, and mentoring junior engineers.
Job Description
- Lead the engineering and design of HV/EHV substations (AIS & GIS)
- Serve as Engineer of Record (EOR) on projects (if licensed)
- Develop and review one-lines, three-lines, schematics, wiring diagrams, and physical layouts
- Oversee protection & control design, including relaying schemes and SCADA systems
- Perform and review system studies (short circuit, load flow, grounding, coordination)
- Define and review equipment specifications (power transformers, breakers, disconnects, CTs/PTs, bus systems)
- Provide technical leadership on substation layouts, grounding grids, lightning protection, and insulation coordination
- Conduct design reviews, QA/QC, and ensure compliance with utility and industry standards
- Interface directly with utilities, clients, and project stakeholders
- Mentor junior engineers and support team development
- Greenfield substation design (AIS & GIS)
- Brownfield upgrades and expansions in energized environments
- Breaker-and-a-half, ring bus, and double bus configurations
- Renewable interconnections (solar, wind, BESS)
- Protection & control upgrades, relay replacements, and SCADA integration

The Successful Applicant
A Successful Senior Substation Engineer Should Have
- 7-15 years of experience in substation engineering / power delivery
- Deep expertise in HV/EHV systems (69kV-500kV)
- Strong background in substation physical P&C design
- Experience with complex bus configurations and utility standards
- Proficiency with AutoCAD, MicroStation, ETAP, SKM, ASPEN, or similar tools
- Experience working with utilities such as BPA, PGE, PacifiCorp, or similar
- Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering
- PE License required (or ability to obtain quickly)
- Competitive hourly pay ranging from $90 to $100 USD, based on experience.
