Job Description

You will prepare and perform detailed reviews of the following substation drawings:

  • Substation General Arrangement
  • Substation Electrical Equipment Plans
  • Substation Electrical Section Views (Elevations)
  • Substation Detailed Bill of Material
  • Substation Lightning Stroke Shielding Plan
  • Substation Grounding Plan
  • Substation Conduit, Electrical Connection, and Grounding Details
  • Substation Below‑Grade Conduit/Raceway Plan
  • Control Building Equipment, Cable Tray, Lighting, and Grounding Plans and Sections

Additional Responsibilities Include

  • Performing technical reviews of project team comments on vendor design deliverables and coordinating incorporation of those comments.
  • Leading field walkdowns, gathering data at client facilities, and interfacing with clients/contractors to resolve walkdown issues.
  • Conducting constructability walkdowns with clients and contractors.
  • Identifying applicable codes and standards, guiding their application, and contributing to quality system improvements.
  • Providing guidance and mentoring to designers, drafters, and project stakeholders in design/drafting tools and client‑specific tools.
  • Reviewing and supervising the production of design deliverables.
  • Offering technical guidance during the preparation and review of calculations associated with design processes.
  • Developing cost‑effective design approaches for assigned projects.
  • Coordinating with other engineering disciplines to ensure integrated design completeness.
  • Preparing and reviewing calculations and obtaining required design inputs.
  • Implementing work plan requirements within budget and schedule and guiding the team to meet both.
  • Delegating and monitoring the work of assigned technical staff and providing performance feedback.
  • Managing routine day‑to‑day performance and personnel issues for assigned team members.

The Successful Applicant

A Successful Physical Substation Designer Should Have

  • Associate Degree in Drafting or equivalent technical experience.
  • 5 years of substation physical design experience.
  • Advanced knowledge of AutoCAD and/or MicroStation.
  • Strong ability to visualize equipment details, phase‑to‑ground and phase‑to‑phase clearances.
  • Ability to multitask across multiple projects.
  • Strong 3D visualization ability without the use of computer tools.

Valued Knowledge / Skills

  • Associate Degree in Computer‑Aided Design.
  • Familiarity with Bentley Substation, Inventor SDS, and BlueBeam.
  • Experience with ground‑based Lidar and converting point‑cloud data to vector files.
  • Knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principles for producing technical plans, drawings, and models.
  • Understanding of engineering technology and how various equipment integrates within a technical design.
