I'm currently partnered with the CFO of a multi-million-dollar manufacturing organization located near Bolingbrook, Illinois, who is looking to add an Enterprise Controller to support five business units across the company.This individual will serve as a key partner to the CFO, helping drive alignment and standardization across all units. They will be responsible for leading the month-end close process and establishing consistent reporting standards across the organization.
Job Description
Enterprise Controller Responsibilities:
- Lead accounting and reporting activities across five separate business units, ensuring adherence to GAAP and internal governance standards.
- Act as the primary controller for select operating entities, overseeing their full-cycle accounting and reporting responsibilities.
- Own and continuously enhance the month-end close process, with a focus on improving speed, accuracy, and financial insight.
- Ensure consistent use of accrual accounting principles and standardization of journal entries, reconciliations, and supporting schedules across all entities.
- Prepare and deliver consolidated financial statements on a timely basis, including income statement, balance sheet, and cash flow reporting.
- Perform detailed variance analysis and explain key financial drivers, identifying performance trends and recommending corrective actions.
- Serve as the primary owner and expert for historical and actual financial reporting.
- Coordinate consolidated budgeting efforts, including ownership of fixed cost inputs and other key budget assumptions.
- Design, implement, and maintain robust internal control frameworks to protect assets and ensure accurate financial reporting.
- Develop and maintain standardized accounting policies and procedures across all business units to ensure consistency and alignment.
- Conduct ongoing risk assessments and recommend enhancements to strengthen financial and operational controls.
- Lead the year-end audit process, acting as the main point of contact for external auditors, coordinating schedules, and ensuring timely completion of deliverables.
- Partner with external tax advisors to support federal and state tax filings, estimated payments, and shareholder distributions.
- Ensure ongoing compliance with all regulatory, statutory, and financial reporting requirements.
- Manage enterprise cash activities, including daily cash positioning, intercompany transfers, and liquidity optimization.
- Maintain and strengthen banking relationships, including oversight of signatory structures, credit facilities, and payment approval processes.
- Build and maintain a rolling 13-week cash flow forecast as well as longer-term liquidity models to support strategic planning.
- Drive improvements in working capital efficiency across receivables, payables, and inventory management.
- Manage the annual insurance renewal process in partnership with brokers and leadership to ensure appropriate coverage at competitive terms.
- Oversee corporate risk management initiatives to ensure financial protection and policy compliance across the organization.
- Lead efforts to streamline accounting operations, enhance ERP/system utilization, and reduce manual processes through automation.
- Mentor and develop accounting team members across business units, fostering a culture of accountability, accuracy, and continuous improvement.
The Successful Applicant
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance
- 6 years of relevant experience
- Experience overseeing multiple business units and managing consolidations
- Hands-on ownership of the month-end close (not just delegating)
- Prior management experience
- Manufacturing industry experience (larger company preferred)
- ERP system experience
- Public accounting experience (preferred, not required)
- Private equity-backed company experience (preferred, not required)
- Experience with job costing and WIP (preferred)
