The GIS Analyst is responsible for collecting, editing, analyzing, maintaining, and visualizing geospatial data to support client operations and decision-making.

This role works closely with municipal staff, MGP team members, and client stakeholders to deliver accurate data, useful maps, practical GIS tools, and clear insights that improve day-to-day service delivery.

Key Responsibilities

GIS Data Management & Analysis

  • Collect, edit, validate, clean, and maintain geospatial datasets for accuracy, completeness, and consistency
  • Apply GIS tools and analysis methods to support operational needs, planning, reporting, and decision-making
  • Perform data quality control and cleanup processes to resolve errors and improve data integrity
  • Support the use of local government GIS data standards and best practices
  • Document workflows, assumptions, and data processes clearly and consistently

Mapping, Visualization & GIS Products

  • Create clear, accurate, and useful map products for technical and non-technical audiences
  • Develop and maintain web maps, GIS applications, dashboards, and other visualization tools as appropriate
  • Apply cartographic best practices and user-focused design principles
  • Translate complex spatial information into practical insights clients can understand and use

Client Support & Service Delivery

  • Collaborate with municipal staff and MGP team members to understand needs, define solutions, and deliver high-quality GIS support
  • Provide responsive technical support and practical guidance to GIS users
  • Train end users on GIS tools, workflows, maps, and applications
  • Communicate project status, findings, risks, and recommendations clearly
  • Build trusted relationships by being personable, reliable, resourceful, and service-oriented

Technical Growth & Continuous Improvement

  • Use ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, and related GIS tools to support client needs
  • Learn and apply tools such as ModelBuilder, SQL, Python, Arcade, and other GIS technologies as appropriate to the role
  • Identify opportunities to streamline workflows, improve data quality, and increase client value
  • Stay curious, growth-oriented, and open to new approaches that improve GIS service delivery

Work Environment

This job is primarily performed on client sites, with work also occurring at MGP’s office in Schaumburg, IL as needed. Client environments may vary by community and department, including administrative offices, public works facilities, and other municipal workspaces.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in GIS, geography, urban planning, public administration, environmental science, computer science, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience
  • Client-centric, service-oriented, and growth-minded
  • Experience working with GIS data, maps, spatial analysis, and geospatial workflows
  • Working knowledge of ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online
  • Ability to collect, edit, clean, validate, and maintain geospatial datasets with strong attention to detail
  • Ability to create clear map products and visualizations for technical and non-technical audiences
  • Strong problem-solving and critical thinking skills, with the ability to translate client needs into practical GIS solutions
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively with team members and client stakeholders while managing individual responsibilities
  • Demonstrated commitment to high-quality work, professionalism, and exceptional client service
  • Proficiency with Microsoft 365 tools, including Teams, Outlook, SharePoint, and Excel, or the ability to quickly learn new technologies

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting local government, municipal operations, utilities, public works, planning, community development, or similar public-sector environments
  • Experience with web mapping, dashboards, field data collection, or GIS application configuration
  • Familiarity with ModelBuilder, SQL, Python, Arcade, or other tools used to automate or improve GIS workflows
  • Experience training users, documenting workflows, or supporting clients in a consulting or service-delivery environment

Pre-Employment Requirements

  • Must be able to provide three professional references, including at least one current or former supervisor
  • Must be able to successfully pass a background check
