Entry-Level Bookkeeper / Tax Preparation Trainee

Job Overview

MGE CPA & Advisors, a veteran-owned accounting firm serving the Mississippi Gulf Coast, is seeking a motivated, detail-oriented individual to support our bookkeeping and tax preparation services.

This position offers an opportunity to strengthen your accounting skills while working with individuals, small businesses, and nonprofit organizations. You will assist with maintaining accurate financial records and receive supervised training in individual and business tax preparation.

Prior hands-on experience with Intuit ProConnect Tax is preferred. Training will be provided to expand your tax knowledge and help you learn our firm’s procedures.

Responsibilities

• Maintain client financial records in QuickBooks Online, including entering and categorizing transactions.
• Assist with accounts payable and accounts receivable, invoice processing, and payment reconciliation.
• Reconcile bank and credit card accounts, investigate discrepancies, and identify missing information.
• Prepare journal entries and assist with general ledger review, balance sheet reconciliations, and month-end closing.
• Prepare financial reports and organize bookkeeping records for tax preparation.
• Assist with individual and business tax returns in Intuit ProConnect Tax under supervision.
• Organize tax documents, enter information accurately, and flag missing documents or inconsistencies for review.
• Support payroll processing, payroll reconciliations, and report preparation.
• Apply basic generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and learn nonprofit accounting practices as needed.
• Communicate professionally with clients to request records and clarify transactions.
• Maintain organized electronic workpapers and protect confidential client information.
• Track assignments and time accurately, meet deadlines, and follow firm review procedures.

Required Qualifications

• Basic understanding of debits and credits, double-entry bookkeeping, journal entries, and account reconciliation.
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets.
• Strong attention to detail and accurate data entry skills.
• Good written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to manage multiple assignments, follow instructions, and ask questions when clarification is needed.
• Willingness to learn, accept feedback, and take responsibility for the accuracy of your work.
• Professional judgment and discretion when handling sensitive financial and personal information.

Preferred Qualifications

• Prior hands-on experience using Intuit ProConnect Tax, including entering tax information and navigating returns.
• Experience with QuickBooks Online, including transaction categorization and bank reconciliations.
• Prior employment, internship, or coursework in accounting, bookkeeping, or tax preparation.
• Familiarity with individual or small-business tax returns.
• Experience with payroll, sales tax reporting, or nonprofit bookkeeping.
• QuickBooks Online ProAdvisor certification.
• Bilingual English and Spanish communication skills.

This position is well suited for someone early in their accounting career who already has experience with Intuit ProConnect Tax and wants to grow within a CPA firm.

Pay: $15.00 - $25.00 per hour

Expected hours: 24.0 – 32.0 per week
