The Role
The HR Manager at MPD is the cornerstone of our people operations. You’ll manage the full HR function — from payroll and benefits to recruiting, safety, compliance, culture, and employee engagement. This isn’t a back-office role; you’ll be a visible, trusted presence for crews and leadership alike, aligning our HR strategy with operational goals ensuring a positive workplace culture.
What You’ll Manage
Payroll & Compensation
- Process accurate, timely payroll and maintain competitive wage structures
- Administer merit increases, adjustments, and off-cycle changes
- Ensure compliance with federal and Michigan wage and hour laws
- Manage all payroll records, tax filings, and government reporting (W-2s, 941s)
Benefits Administration
- Serve as primary point of contact for health, dental, vision, life, and voluntary benefits
- Annually review, evaluate and recommend updated to all benefits
- Lead annual open enrollment and 401(k) administration
- Ensure ACA, Form 5500, and ERISA compliance and reporting
Talent Acquisition
- Own full-cycle recruiting: job postings, sourcing, interviews, offers, and onboarding
- Build pipelines through trade schools, workforce development programs, and referrals
- Maintain applicant tracking records and deliver regular recruiting reports
HR Records, Systems & Compliance
- Manage HRIS and maintain accurate, confidential personnel files
- Oversee performance management: reviews, 30/60/90s, PIPs, and all required documentation
- Maintain the employee handbook and HR policies
Safety Training & Workers’ Comp
- Schedule and track safety certifications (forklift, AEWP, First Aid/CPR/AED)
- Oversee workers’ comp claims and maintain OSHA 300 logs
- Support monthly toolbox talks and internal safety training
Culture, Engagement & Wellness
- Oversee MPD Happenings — our monthly company-wide recognition newsletter
- Collaborate with Office Manager on semi-annual family events, quarterly meetings, and community giving initiatives
- Run employee feedback surveys and present insights to leadership
- Champion wellness programs, EAP promotion, and employee recognition
What We’re Looking For
- Bachelor’s degree in HR, Business Administration, or related field (or equivalent experience)
- 3–5 years of progressive HR experience; trades or construction environment a strong plus
- Hands-on experience with payroll, benefits administration, and HRIS platforms
- Strong knowledge of Michigan and federal employment law (FMLA, ADA, FLSA, OSHA, EEO)
- Excellent communicator — equally comfortable with field crews and senior leadership
- High integrity, discretion, and the ability to manage multiple priorities independently
- Proficient in Microsoft Office
- SHRM-CP/SCP, PHR, or equivalent certification strongly preferred
- OSHA 30-Hour certification a plus
