About Meulenberg Painting & Decorating

For over 30 years, Meulenberg Painting & Decorating has been one of West Michigan’s most trusted residential and commercial painters — a family-first company with a reputation built on high quality craftsmanship and professional service. Our mission is simple: to provide the best quality painting service to our customers, incorporating honesty and integrity into every service we provide. We’re proud of our team-first culture, and as we continue to grow, we’re looking for an HR Manager who shares these values and is ready to make a real impact on our people operations.

The Role

The HR Manager at MPD is the cornerstone of our people operations. You’ll manage the full HR function — from payroll and benefits to recruiting, safety, compliance, culture, and employee engagement. This isn’t a back-office role; you’ll be a visible, trusted presence for crews and leadership alike, aligning our HR strategy with operational goals ensuring a positive workplace culture.

What You’ll Manage

Payroll & Compensation

  • Process accurate, timely payroll and maintain competitive wage structures
  • Administer merit increases, adjustments, and off-cycle changes
  • Ensure compliance with federal and Michigan wage and hour laws
  • Manage all payroll records, tax filings, and government reporting (W-2s, 941s)

Benefits Administration

  • Serve as primary point of contact for health, dental, vision, life, and voluntary benefits
  • Annually review, evaluate and recommend updated to all benefits
  • Lead annual open enrollment and 401(k) administration
  • Ensure ACA, Form 5500, and ERISA compliance and reporting

Talent Acquisition

  • Own full-cycle recruiting: job postings, sourcing, interviews, offers, and onboarding
  • Build pipelines through trade schools, workforce development programs, and referrals
  • Maintain applicant tracking records and deliver regular recruiting reports

HR Records, Systems & Compliance

  • Manage HRIS and maintain accurate, confidential personnel files
  • Oversee performance management: reviews, 30/60/90s, PIPs, and all required documentation
  • Maintain the employee handbook and HR policies

Safety Training & Workers’ Comp

  • Schedule and track safety certifications (forklift, AEWP, First Aid/CPR/AED)
  • Oversee workers’ comp claims and maintain OSHA 300 logs
  • Support monthly toolbox talks and internal safety training

Culture, Engagement & Wellness

  • Oversee MPD Happenings — our monthly company-wide recognition newsletter
  • Collaborate with Office Manager on semi-annual family events, quarterly meetings, and community giving initiatives
  • Run employee feedback surveys and present insights to leadership
  • Champion wellness programs, EAP promotion, and employee recognition

What We’re Looking For

  • Bachelor’s degree in HR, Business Administration, or related field (or equivalent experience)
  • 3–5 years of progressive HR experience; trades or construction environment a strong plus
  • Hands-on experience with payroll, benefits administration, and HRIS platforms
  • Strong knowledge of Michigan and federal employment law (FMLA, ADA, FLSA, OSHA, EEO)
  • Excellent communicator — equally comfortable with field crews and senior leadership
  • High integrity, discretion, and the ability to manage multiple priorities independently
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office
  • SHRM-CP/SCP, PHR, or equivalent certification strongly preferred
  • OSHA 30-Hour certification a plus

Compensation & Benefits

  • Competitive salary commensurate with experience
  • Profit-sharing
  • Health, dental, vision, and life insurance
  • Voluntary benefits: accident, critical illness, short-term disability
  • 401(k) with company contribution
  • Paid time off and holidays
  • Participation in company wellness and recognition programs
