A successful, fast-growing middle-market law firm is seeking a hands-on Controller to oversee the firm’s accounting and financial operations. The Controller will be responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, managing the accounting team, strengthening internal controls, and providing timely financial reporting to firm leadership.
This position is primarily focused on day-to-day accounting operations, but it offers the opportunity to grow into a broader strategic finance role over time.
Responsibilities:
- Oversee the general ledger, monthly and year-end closings, account reconciliations, journal entries, and financial reporting.
- Prepare monthly financial statements, cash-flow reports, budgets, forecasts, and variance analyses.
- Supervise billing, collections, accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll, and cash management.
- Monitor work in process, accounts-receivable aging, collections, realization, and other law-firm financial metrics.
- Oversee client trust accounting and related reconciliations and controls.
- Manage banking relationships, and cash-flow planning.
- Develop and maintain effective accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls.
- Supervise and develop accounting personnel and provide hands-on assistance as needed.
- Identify opportunities to improve financial systems, reporting, and accounting processes.
- Provide financial information and practical analysis to firm leadership.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field.
- CPA designation preferred but not required.
- At least 7 years of progressively responsible accounting experience.
- Prior law-firm or professional-services experience preferred.
- Strong knowledge of general accounting, financial reporting, budgeting, payroll, cash management, and internal controls.
- Experience supervising accounting staff and managing competing deadlines.
- Strong Excel skills and experience with accounting, billing, or practice-management systems.
- High level of accuracy, judgment, discretion, and professionalism.
