Assistant Director – Workers Compensation (OA) Min: $103,721 – Max: $146,827

Summary

The Assistant Director – Workers Compensation (Case Management), is responsible for effective management of worker compensation claims for their assigned area of responsibility. This person supports the Senior Commercial Director, Workers’ Compensation, and is involved in effective case management, vendor management, and a variety of key external organizations. The Case Management Assistant Director’s primary objective is to reduce the open inventory of claims, ensure effective management of employees’ treatment in work-related injuries, and reduce overall costs. Some of the major responsibilities include supervising the TPA’s claims management and medical provider networks as well as coordinating and managing case management strategies. The MTA Case Management supervisor will respond to both internal and external customer requests, follows up on TPA employee contact for treatment and escalation if needed, and provides operational support for case management and litigation.

Responsibilities

  • Identifies and oversees workers’ compensation claims to ensure rapid closure while maintaining the required claim information in the claims database to ensure information is up to date and organized.
  • Coordinates case management efforts between third-party administrator (TPA) and NYCT / MTA Bus / HQ administrative and operating departments to ensure claims are properly managed and conduct strategy discussions with TPA to ensure claims are progressing towards resolution. This includes responding to employee claims questions and treatment options available as an escalation point from TPA and ensuring trust is maintained between the employee and company.
  • Participates in settlement conferences, hearings, and trials on worker compensation cases to ensure proper representation and support is provided. This includes meetings with witnesses, TPA, and counsel to understand and clarify testimony prior to hearings to ensure company interests are properly represented and participating in settlement conferences, hearings, and trials on worker compensation cases to ensure proper representation and support is provided.
  • Reviews cases for potential settlement opportunities to authorize settlements within MTA guidelines and monitor and track jurisdictional results to ensure future case preparations are properly aligned.
  • Supervises non-outsourced activities including but not limited to differential administration, state forms, waiver and election restoral, claimant contact for those with legal representation.

Education And Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Business Administration, Law, Public Policy, Government or a related field. Minimum 8 years progressively responsible experience in Workers’ Compensation claims management and administration. At least 4 years in a supervisory or managerial capacity, at least two in a large-scale environment, or a satisfactory equivalent of education and experience and/or leadership role in a large, multi-faceted, fast-paced organization or governmental body preferred. Experience with a major private insurance carrier or a position which included risk management. This could also be with a self-insured or government agency.
  • A satisfactory combination of education and experience may be considered in lieu of degree.

Desired Skills

  • Master’s degree in a related field.
  • Attainment of or in the process of attaining specific functional licenses or certifications in area of specialty if applicable.
  • Familiarity with the MTA’s policies and procedures.
  • Familiarity with the MTA’s collective bargaining procedures
