Low Voltage Installation Technician - (Data Cabling, CCTV, A/V, Access Control)

Metro Detroit Integrated Systems (MDIS) is looking for motivated Low Voltage Installation Technicians to join our growing team.

MDIS installs and services low voltage systems such as audiovisual, security cameras, access control, paging systems, and data cabling and fiber cabling for commercial and government customers. We believe in doing quality work, using modern technology, supporting our technicians, and having fun.

This position is a great fit for someone who enjoys working with technology, using tools, learning new skills, and working on different job sites throughout Metro Detroit.

Job Responsibilities:

Depending on your experience level, responsibilities may include:

• Pulling, routing, labeling, and securing low-voltage cable
• Terminating and testing Category 6, Category 6A, coaxial, speaker, security, and fiber-optic cabling
• Installing security cameras, card readers, door hardware, speakers, displays, projectors, microphones, and other low-voltage equipment
• Mounting equipment using ladders and lift equipment
• Assisting with equipment rack installation, wiring, and organization
• Installing conduit, cable supports, J-hooks, and pathways
• Reading basic drawings, floor plans, and cable schedules
• Keeping job sites, company vehicles, and work areas clean and organized
• Troubleshooting basic wiring and equipment issues
• Working with lead technicians and project managers to complete projects safely and correctly
• Learning system programming, networking, testing, and commissioning as experience grows

Qualifications:

• Interest in technology, construction, electrical work, or skilled trades
• Basic experience using hand and power tools
• Ability to follow instructions and work well with a team
• Positive attitude and willingness to learn
• Reliable attendance/transportation and strong work ethic
• Comfortable working on ladders and lift equipment
• Ability to safely lift and carry tools, ladders, cable, and equipment
• Valid driver’s license with a good driving record
• Authorized to work in the United States
• Ability to periodically travel or work outside normal business hours when required

Previous low-voltage, electrical, construction, audiovisual, security, networking, or data-cabling experience is helpful but not required.

Helpful (but not required) Experience:

Experience with any of the following low voltage is a plus:

• Commercial data cabling
• Fiber-optic cabling
• Security cameras and video management systems
• Access control and intercom systems
• Mounting TV's
• Commercial audiovisual systems
• Paging and sound-masking systems
• Basic computer networking
• Equipment rack building
• Reading construction drawings or wiring diagrams

Familiarity with brands such as Axis Communications, Digital Watchdog, Avigilon, Q-SYS, Atlona, JBL, Shure, Bogen, Aiphone, Ubiquiti, Aruba, Cisco, or similar manufacturers is helpful but not required.

Industry certifications such as BICSI, AVIXA CTS, CEDIA, or manufacturer training are also a plus, but MDIS provides training opportunities for employees who want to advance.

Compensation and Benefits:

• This position is available as either hourly or salaried, depending on experience and qualifications. Hourly pay ranges from approximately $19–$25 per hour, with salaried positions starting at approximately $45,000 annually.

• Have you ever been directly responsible for installing a CCTV camera system from start to finish? If yes, what was the largest security camera system you have ever installed? What type of system was installed (brand, IP or analog, one site, multi-site)? Provide details about who ran the cabling, who installed the cameras, who installed the server, who IP’d the cameras, and what recording settings or unique analytics were added. Who performed training with the customer?
• Have you ever been directly responsible for installing an audio system from start to finish? Yes or No? If yes, what type of sound system was installed (8 ohm, 100V, or 70V)? What type of speakers were used, how many? How were they installed and powered? What sources were used, and how was the system controlled? Did you program a DSP or any advanced sound processors? Did microphones or antennas get added to the system? How did you test the system? How was the system documented? Did you provide training to the customer?
• Do you have formal or field experience with configuring local area networks (LAN)? If so, provide examples of how you have used networking in past projects for security cameras, AV projects, or network setups. What products were used, and did you configure the network? Did the customer have an IT department on site? Did you create a spreadsheet with network credentials?
• Have you ever installed an access control or intercom system? If you have, what type of system was installed? Did you run cabling? What role did you have in the installation? Who programmed the system? Did you tie into any doors, gates, or unique devices? If so, what steps were taken to integrate these devices? Can you install door strikes from agents? What experience do you have working with these devices?
• You are starting a pre-wire for a data cabling job. What steps would you take for running cabling to ensure it is up to code, and future people know what was run?
• You arrive onsite and discover a device is filled with water. What do you do next?
