Low Voltage Installation Technician

Pay: $22.00–$25.00 per hour

Job Description:

Metro Detroit Integrated Systems (MDIS) is looking for motivated Low Voltage Installation Technicians with approximately 2–3 years of experience in low-voltage installation to join our growing team.

MDIS installs and services low-voltage systems such as audiovisual, security cameras, access control, paging systems, data cabling, and fiber-optic cabling for commercial and government customers. We believe in doing quality work, using modern technology, supporting our technicians, and having fun.

This position is a great fit for someone who enjoys working with technology, using tools, learning new skills, and working on different job sites throughout Metro Detroit.

We’re looking for someone who has a solid foundation, takes initiative, and can keep work moving without needing step-by-step direction. You should be comfortable handling a smaller installation from start to finish, providing direction to a helper technician, and knowing when to ask questions or involve a project manager. You do not need to be an expert in every system we install, but we are looking for people with some low voltage industry experience.

Job Responsibilities:

Depending on your experience and the project, responsibilities may include:

• Successfully completing commercial and government low-voltage installation jobs from start to finish
• Pulling, routing, labeling, securing, terminating, and testing Category 6, Category 6A, coaxial, speaker, security, and fiber-optic cabling.
• Installing conduit, cable supports, J-hooks, and cabling pathways.
• Installing security cameras, card readers, door hardware, speakers, displays, projectors, microphones, and other low-voltage equipment using ladders and lifts as needed.
• Reviewing project scopes, drawings, floor plans, and cable schedules to plan the installation work
• Installing, wiring, and organizing equipment racks
• Configuring and testing systems within your experience level, with support from other technicians as needed
• Troubleshooting wiring and equipment issues
• Providing direction to helper technicians and checking their work for quality and accuracy
• Communicating job progress, material needs, and installation issues to project managers
• Training customers on system operation and documenting completed work with photos, test results, and a final update to your manager
• Following safe work practices and keeping job sites, company vehicles, and work areas clean and organized
• Continuing to develop skills in system programming, networking, testing, and commissioning

Qualifications:

Helpful qualifications for this position may include:

• 2 - 3 years of experience in low-voltage installation or a related field, such as data cabling, audiovisual, CCTV security cameras, access control, alarm, fiber, or related.
• Ability to complete common installation tasks independently and take ownership of assigned work
• Ability to organize a smaller job and provide practical direction to helper technician(s)
• Proficiency with basic hand and power tools
• Ability to follow instructions, read basic installation drawings, and work well with a team
• Good troubleshooting skills, attention to detail, and installation quality
• Positive attitude, initiative, and willingness to learn and grow
• Reliable attendance and transportation, with a strong work ethic
• Comfortable working on ladders and using lift equipment
• Ability to safely lift and carry tools, ladders, cable, and equipment
• Valid driver’s license with a good driving record
• Authorized to work in the United States
• Ability to periodically travel or work outside normal business hours when required

Helpful Experience:

2–3 years of experience in the following areas (experience in every area is not required):

• Commercial data cabling
• Fiber-optic cabling
• Security cameras and video management systems
• Access control and intercom systems
• Mounting TVs and displays
• Commercial audiovisual systems
• Paging and sound-masking systems
• Basic computer networking
• Equipment rack building
• Reading construction drawings or wiring diagrams

Familiarity with brands such as Axis Communications, Digital Watchdog, Avigilon, Q-SYS, Atlona, JBL, Shure, Bogen, Aiphone, Ubiquiti, Aruba, Cisco, or similar manufacturers is helpful but not required.

Industry credentials such as BICSI Installer 1 (INST1), AVIXA AV Technologist, CEDIA Cabling & Infrastructure Technician (CIT), or manufacturer training are helpful but not required. MDIS provides paid training opportunities for employees who want to expand their skills.

• This position is available as either hourly or salaried, depending on experience and qualifications. Hourly pay ranges from $22–$25 per hour.
