Senior Project Manager – Roadway/ Highway Design

About the Opportunity
We are representing an established engineering consultancy in the search for a Senior Project Manager to join its transportation team in Chicago, Illinois.
This is an opportunity for an experienced transportation professional to take a leading role in the planning, design and delivery of roadway and transportation infrastructure projects, while managing multidisciplinary teams, client relationships, budgets and project schedules.
The ideal candidate will bring 15 years of professional experience, including significant project management and client-facing experience. A Professional Engineer (PE) license is required, with an Illinois PE preferred or the ability to obtain one within six months.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and coordinate multidisciplinary transportation project teams, including engineers, technicians and consultants.
- Manage projects from conceptual planning through final design and construction.
- Develop and maintain comprehensive project plans, schedules, budgets and resource allocations.
- Oversee roadway design and construction activities to ensure compliance with applicable jurisdictional standards.
- Assign responsibilities, monitor progress and ensure key project milestones are delivered on schedule.
- Serve as a primary point of contact for clients, government agencies and community stakeholders.
- Build and maintain strong client relationships throughout project delivery.
- Lead client meetings, project presentations, public hearings and stakeholder discussions.
- Communicate project objectives, progress and technical information to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Address stakeholder concerns and incorporate feedback into project development.
- Manage contracts, billing, collections and project financial performance.
- Monitor project expenditures and maintain cost control throughout the project lifecycle.
- Support project profitability through effective planning, resource management and delivery.
- Mentor junior engineers and staff, helping to develop the wider transportation team.
Ideal Background
- 15 years of professional transportation/civil engineering experience.
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a related discipline required.
- 5 years of project management and client interface experience.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license required.
- Illinois PE preferred, or ability to obtain within 6 months.
- Strong roadway design and transportation engineering experience.
- Familiarity with MicroStation required.
- OpenRoads Designer (ORD) experience preferred.
- Familiarity with IDOT, Illinois Tollway and/or CDOT standards, requirements and regulations.
- Proven experience managing project budgets, schedules and resources.
- Strong technical writing and verbal communication skills.
- Experience leading multidisciplinary teams and mentoring junior staff.
- Comfortable working directly with clients, agencies, contractors and community stakeholders.
- Willingness to travel approximately 20%.
