Roadway Engineer / Highway Designer

Overview
A growing transportation engineering consultancy is seeking a Roadway Engineer / Highway Designer to support the planning, design, and delivery of roadway infrastructure projects for state, county, and municipal clients. This position offers the opportunity to work on a diverse portfolio of roadway improvement, rehabilitation, ADA compliance, and transportation enhancement projects while collaborating with multidisciplinary engineering teams.
The ideal candidate will possess strong roadway design and plan production experience, with proficiency in OpenRoads Designer and a desire to contribute to complex transportation projects from concept development through final design.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop roadway corridor models utilizing OpenRoads Designer (ORD).
- Prepare horizontal and vertical alignments for transportation infrastructure projects.
- Develop typical sections, geometric layouts, and roadway design plans.
- Produce roadway improvement plan sheets, including resurfacing, geometric improvements, ADA upgrades, and multimodal enhancements.
- Develop staged Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) plans to support construction sequencing and traffic operations.
- Prepare signing and pavement marking plans in accordance with applicable standards and agency requirements.
- Perform quantity takeoffs and develop construction cost estimates.
- Coordinate with project managers, engineers, and technical staff to support project delivery and client objectives.
- Participate in field investigations, design reviews, and agency coordination efforts.
- Support project delivery from preliminary engineering through final design and construction documentation.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or related discipline.
- Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification required.
- Ability to obtain Professional Engineer (PE) licensure.
- 2 years of roadway design experience supporting transportation infrastructure projects.
- Experience working with state DOT, county, municipal, or transportation agency projects preferred.
- Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
Technical Experience
- Proficiency with OpenRoads Designer (ORD) required.
- Experience developing roadway geometry, alignments, cross sections, and construction plans.
- Familiarity with MicroStation, AutoCAD Civil 3D, ProjectWise, and related transportation design software.
- Experience preparing MOT, signing and pavement marking, and ADA-compliant design plans.
- Knowledge of roadway design standards, agency manuals, and transportation engineering best practices.
Preferred Experience
Experience in one or more of the following areas is highly desirable:
- Traffic signal design
- Roadway lighting design
- Traffic engineering analysis (LOS, Synchro, SIDRA, HCS, etc.)
- Drainage and stormwater management design
- Erosion and sediment control
- Environmental permitting and agency coordination
