Metcon is a commercial general contractor that specializes in construction management, negotiated, design-build and select hard-bid projects. A Project Engineer 1 is to support the Project Manager with leading, directing and overseeing the safe and effective daily operation of a project. They will serve as an important point of contact for project buyout, logistics, risk management, communications, planning, contracts, and reporting. Ability to support the project team execute project objectives resulting in “on time” and within budget. Responsibilities begin from the preconstruction, start of construction through close-out, commissioning, and warranty. Entry level role, approximate time in role is 0- 2 years. Level is determined by performance, experience, project complexity, size, and value. Act as needed to ensure project goals, objectives and initiatives are met in alignment with the mission, vision, and values of Metcon.

Job Description

Assist in the effective daily operation of a single project, or multiple projects, by providing technical and informational support to the project team. Establish project objectives and policies, maintain liaison with prime clients and monitor construction and financial activities.

Job Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Learn to effectively manage project schedules, material procurement, subcontractors, resources, and project documentation. Assist in the management of Owner Change Orders, Subcontractor Change Orders, RFI’s, and project closeout.
  • Develop a knowledge base by conducting frequent and regular site inspections to ensure installations meet, or exceed, approved submittals, shop drawings and quality of construction in support of overall project schedule.
  • Effectively manage, document, and keep record of project submittals (Product Data, Shop Drawings, Samples, Mockups) with subcontractors, design team and owners to ensure all materials (and associated installations) are approved in a timely manner to keep the project on schedule.
  • Manage and update all Contract Drawings and Specifications with Architect Supplemental Information to ensure field operations has the most current set of documents. Prepare all meeting agendas, record, and distribute all meeting minutes to the Project Team.
  • Participate in preconstruction activities regarding project planning and design; interpretation of design, application of construction methods; resolution and documentation of design conflicts; construct ability reviews, bidding processes, subcontractor solicitations, and post bid scope reviews.
  • Collaborate with mentors to learn implementation and maintenance of safe working conditions and to ensure personnel are working to their highest efficiency to meet project, operating division productivity and profitability.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to walk long distances across uneven or rough terrain, such as gravel, dirt, or construction surfaces, during site inspections.
  • Capability to stand for extended periods during site walkthroughs, meetings, or equipment inspections.
  • Balance and Coordination: Adequate balance to navigate around obstacles, trenches, scaffolding, and construction materials.
  • Ability to climb ladders or scaffolding to inspect elevated structures or access rooftops.
  • Comfort working at elevated heights while following safety protocols, including the use of harnesses or other fall protection gear.
  • Ability to climb stairs, ladders or navigate inclined surfaces commonly found at construction sites.
  • Capability to lift and carry objects weighing up to 2050 pounds, as needed.
  • Ability to handle and move smaller construction materials or tools during inspections or meetings with the construction crew.
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, or wind, during site visits and inspections.
  • Tolerance for exposure to noise, dust, fumes, and other environmental factors present on construction sites.
  • Communication in noisy environments and listen for important safety signals, as well as the ability to convey instructions clearly to teams.
  • Reading blueprints, inspecting work quality, and identifying potential hazards or construction defects onsite.
  • HandEye Coordination: Ability to handle tools, operate devices, or interact with machinery controls during inspections or demonstrations, though typically not to the extent required for labor roles.
  • Safety and PPE (Personal Protective Equipment)
  • PPE Usage: Ability to properly wear and use required PPE, including hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, steeltoed boots, reflective vests, and hearing protection as needed.
  • Awareness and Safety: Quick reaction time and awareness to navigate safely around potentially hazardous areas or equipment.
  • Work Hours: Capacity to work extended hours, including extended periods on your feet or walking around the site.
  • Occasional Physical Strain: The role may require crouching, kneeling, bending, or stretching to inspect areas or equipment.

Minimum Qualifications & Training:

  • Construction Management or Civil Engineering preferred, or an equivalent combination of training and work experience preferred.
  • Entry level work experience.
  • Travel is required from to and from the office to the project site, must have a valid Driver’s License.
