What are the responsibilities and job description for the Plasma Operator - 2nd Shift position at Metals USA?
- Positions work pieces for processing
- Operates a combination of different machines to process work by cutting, burning, sawing, blasting, shearing, punching, grinding, bending, or pressing
- Uses gauges, calipers, squares, or rulers for measurement
- Determines processing specifications such as materials, cutting tools, location of cutting lines, dimensions, tolerances, and operational sequences by reviewing blueprints, work orders, tooling instructions or other written specifications
- Installs and aligns specified punches, cutting blades or other fixtures in machine bed using gauges, templates, feelers, shims, or hand tools
- Adjusts controls to set cutting speed, depth and feed rates; and diagnoses problems and makes necessary adjustments
- Performs quality control inspections on finished product; for ISO-certified locations, performs In Process Quality Inspections
- Coordinates and executes material handling of all inventories to be processed including operation of overhead crane
- Performs limited preventative maintenance, such as lubrication, cleaning and changing of parts
- May train less experienced workers and perform as lead in absence of group leader
- May mark identification on material/work pieces before processing
- May mark material after processing; store material for additional processing and/or shipping
- Restocks material
- Completes work order paperwork/documentation

Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED
- Minimum 18 years of age
- Reading and writing comprehension in English (to read work order instructions, safety, and policy manuals)
- Measuring skills to read English & Metric systems and a tape measure, caliper, gauges, or micrometer
- Must have mechanical aptitude and arithmetic skills to calculate and convert decimals and fractions
- Experience operating an overhead crane / forklift operator
- Must be proficient in the use of hand tools including grinder
- Demonstrated manual dexterity, finger dexterity, arm-hand steadiness, and multi-limb coordination
- Computer Literacy; Microsoft Products, CAD Programming and ERP
- Must be organized with attention to detail
- Must pass pre employment drug screening
Physical Requirements:
In a typical workday, employee is standing, walking, seeing, hearing, grasping, reaching, pushing, pulling, lifting, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, talking, lifting work pieces weighing up to forty (40) lbs. manually or by crane to work area and positioning it for processing the orders.
Working Conditions:
Employee will work in an open warehouse the majority (98%) of the time and will be exposed to some or all of the following working conditions: extreme heat and cold, noise, vibration, ultra-violet light (produced from machine and requiring darkened safety glasses), oils and atmospheric conditions such as dust, fumes and metallic particles. Employee will be exposed to the hazards of working with heavy machinery. Employee is required to wear a hard hat, safety glasses, gloves and safety boots. The Company furnishes initial hard hat, gloves and safety glasses. The employee furnishes safety boots at own expense.
