General Summary

This role is designed as a hands‑on, entry‑level opportunity for someone who wants to grow into a Controls Engineering career at MTI. The focus is on learning our foundry processes and the control systems that support them, while gaining practical experience with PLCs, HMIs, SCADA, and day‑to‑day automation work. The person in this position will work closely with production, maintenance, and our Controls Engineering team to build the foundational skills needed to support and develop MTI’s control systems over time. As their abilities grow, they’ll also have opportunities to assist with new projects and contribute to implementing automation improvements throughout the facility.

Principle Duties And Responsibilities

  • Assist with and learn the fundamentals of industrial controls, including:
    • Supporting PLC tasks such as reviewing logic, implementing small changes, and understanding how program structures and signals work, with the long‑term goal of developing advanced PLC programming skills.
    • Helping with HMI updates, basic screen modifications, and troubleshooting, while gradually learning how to build and develop more advanced HMI interfaces.
    • Learning how SCADA systems collect, organize, and display data, eventually building toward contributing to more advanced SCADA development and configuration.
  • Facilitate new equipment installations by learning how PLC I/O, wiring, control panels, and automation hardware all connect during setup and commissioning.
  • Support operations and maintenance teams during equipment start‑ups and assist with basic controls and electrical troubleshooting under the guidance of experienced team members.
  • Build foundational skills that grow over time into more advanced programming abilities across PLCs, HMIs, and SCADA systems as experience increases and training progresses.
Knowledge, Skill, And Ability Requirements

  • Basic understanding of industrial controls concepts or a general interest in learning how PLCs, HMIs, and automation systems work.
  • Basic knowledge of Allen Bradley control systems (PLC, HMI, SCADA).
  • Comfortable using a computer and willing to learn software tools related to PLC/HMI/SCADA work.
  • Able to use (or willingness to learn with guidance) a multimeter safely on low‑voltage systems.
  • Willing to work with IT/IS personnel to learn the basics of networks, Ethernet, and device connectivity in an industrial setting.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills for working with production, maintenance, and controls team members.
  • Familiarity with common software tools like Microsoft Office; exposure to AutoCAD and/or similar tools is a bonus but not required.
  • Able to manage multiple tasks while staying organized and focused.
  • Reliable, willing to learn, and able to follow through on assigned tasks.
  • Works well with others and supports a team‑oriented environment.
  • Must be willing to travel and support MTI facilities both domestic and international.

Working Conditions

The Controls Engineer I will reside in the office, however, will be in the plant occasionally. Must be able to adhere to conditions of the plant.

Education And Experience Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Associate’s degree or higher in Electrical Engineering Technology, Industrial Technology, Mechatronics, or a related technical field (Preferred but not required).
  • Relevant technical coursework in electronics, electrical fundamentals, industrial automation, or control systems (Preferred).
