Job Description
Metal Design Systems, Inc. is seeking a full-time Director of Design to lead our Scan, Design, and Programming teams. This role is responsible for managing department schedules, workflows, standards, team development, and resource utilization to ensure projects are completed accurately, efficiently, and on time.
The Director of Design plays a key leadership role in helping the organization achieve success by supporting comprehensive, accurate, and timely project deliverables. This position works closely with leadership, project managers, production teams, field crews, and other internal departments to ensure the Design department is aligned with company strategy, customer expectations, and MDSI’s vision and values.

Primary Outcomes
- Maximize the output and use of resources within Scan, Design, and Programming compared to resources consumed, including money, personnel, and equipment.
- Lead the Scan, Design, and Programming departments to accomplish comprehensive, accurate, and timely deliverables.
- Understand and promote the company’s vision and values.
- Support department alignment with company strategy, customer needs, and project requirements.
- Develop team members, improve workflows, and help strengthen overall department performance.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage the Scan Techs, Designers, and Programmers.
- Collaborate with other departments and project stakeholders to deliver project-specific requirements.
- Set the overall Scan, Design, and Programming schedule and ensure the schedule meets customer and project needs.
- Establish standards and best practices for team members to follow in alignment with other departments.
- Develop and maintain a Design strategy that supports the overall company strategy.
- Support recruitment and onboarding for department roles.
- Coach, develop, and support individual team members.
- Lead team development and strengthen communication, accountability, and performance across the department.
- Implement new software, hardware, tools, and processes that support department needs, including scanners, CAD software, router table software, and related technology.
- Improve workflows to meet or exceed customer expectations.
- Set, maintain, and track key performance indicators.
- Ensure accurate, complete, and timely design deliverables are produced for internal and external customers.
- Promote collaboration between Design, Project Management, Production, and field teams.
Qualifications and Experience Requirements
- Experience in a construction or engineering-related field preferred.
- Experience in 3D drafting or modeling preferred.
- Management or leadership experience required.
- Rhinoceros 8 experience preferred.
- Experience with architectural panels, fabrication drawings, point cloud data, CAD software, production documentation, or related construction/design processes is a plus.
- Strong ability to lead, coach, and develop team members.
- Ability to manage department priorities, schedules, deadlines, and resources.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to accurate, complete work.
- Ability to improve processes, implement standards, and support continuous improvement.
