Job Summary
The Child Support Bookkeeper is responsible for the accurate and timely financial management of child support cases, ensuring compliance with legal requirements and supporting efficient service to families. This role involves a mix of daily, monthly, and ongoing responsibilities centered around payment processing, ledger maintenance, arrears calculations, financial reporting, and collaboration with internal and external stakeholders.
Essential Duties

Payment Processing And Deposits
Process over-the-counter payments and allocate funds using appropriate codes within required timeframes, ensuring payments are allocated correctly.
Ledger Management And Adjustments
Maintain and update financial ledgers and judgments based on court orders, process adjustments for correct balances and case classification, and resolve discrepancies. Initiate and manage all ledgers within defined timelines.
Research And Problem Resolution
Investigate and correct misapplied or lost payments, data errors, and ledger transfers. Track and follow up on financial issues to ensure timely resolution.
Financial Analysis And Calculations
Analyze and interpret court orders and supporting documents to calculate accurate arrears. Prepare legal and financial documentation, including Affidavits of Arrears. Determine balances for Temporary Aid to Needy Families (TANF), foster care, spousal, and child support obligations. Update ledgers and ensure all reporting is accurate.
Monthly Reporting And Monitoring
Monitor and resolve monthly financial reports. Ensure monthly collections are properly recorded. Prepare and submit key reports such as CEPS and Disbursements.
System And Documentation Maintenance
Maintain accurate records in the Automated Child Support Enforcement System (ACSES). Ensure all financial activities are documented for audit and legal purposes. Maintain strict confidentiality, especially in handling Federal Taxpayer information.
Communication And Collaboration
Build and maintain positive professional relationships with colleagues, clients, accountants, auditors, payroll staff, employers, and partner agencies. Serve as a liaison with ACSES, the Family Support Registry (FSR), State office, other counties, and intergovernmental agencies. Collaborate with internal teams including legal, enforcement, and establishment. Communicate professionally, clearly, and effectively in both oral and written formats.
Customer Service And Values
Respond to financial inquiries from internal and external stakeholders, including clients, staff, and partner agencies. Assist in educating employers on Income Withholding Orders. Provide customer service by actively listening to and being inquisitive about the whole person and engaging in service delivery with a collaborative, human-centered approach. Conduct self in accordance with Mesa County DHS values. Foster a positive attitude while actively contributing to a supportive work environment.
Other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications Required
Education and Experience:
High school diploma or equivalent
Minimum of one (1) of related Child Support experience OR (1) year experience in bookkeeping
