Description
The Mechanical Engineer supports the design, development, and improvement of Merrell Bros. equipment and systems used in biosolids processing, environmental technology, and related projects. The goal is to deliver innovative, reliable, and cost-effective equipment and process solutions that meet performance specifications, safety standards, and project timelines (On Specification, On Time, and On Cost).
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
- Collaborate with company executives and project teams to fully understand project scopes and objectives.
- Design and develop new mechanical systems, components, and solutions for existing and new equipment.
- Identify deficiencies in mechanical processes, diagnose failures, and propose engineered solutions.
- Perform detailed engineering calculations, analyses, and testing to validate new designs.
- Create and manage 3D CAD models and drawings in SolidWorks for parts, assemblies, and systems.
- Work closely with fabrication and assembly teams to ensure design intent is achieved in production.
- Manage and coordinate subcontractors and vendors for assigned projects as needed.
- Support and occasionally participate hands-on in the shop for prototype builds and testing.
- Lead or assist in the development of new R&D technologies, evaluating scalability and commercial viability.
- Develop and execute validation testing protocols to qualify mechanical systems and ensure performance compliance.
- Review cost and financial impacts of design and process changes to assess feasibility.
- Document all engineering work, including reports, drawings, calculations, and project files.
- Maintain compliance with safety standards and internal reporting requirements.
- Contribute to Merrell Bros. continuous improvement culture and uphold company reputation and values.
Qualifications
Experience, Knowledge & Abilities
- 7 years of mechanical design experience, preferably in heavy fabrication or high-mix manufacturing environments.
- Strong knowledge of mechanical systems, fabrication methods, and production processes.
- Proficient in SolidWorks and mechanical design software; basic AutoCAD skills preferred.
- Demonstrated project management ability and organizational skills.
- Proven record of creative problem-solving, innovation, and technical leadership.
- Familiarity with Lean principles and continuous improvement initiatives (3–5 years preferred).
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills with proven ability to work in cross-functional teams.
- Self-driven and able to handle multiple projects simultaneously.
- Licensed Professional Mechanical Engineer preferred.
Education/Training
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering (BSME) or equivalent technical discipline required.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred.
- Lean Six Sigma training or certification a plus.
Physical Demands
- Ability to work for extended periods on a computer (CAD and analysis tools).
- Occasional lifting of parts and prototypes (<50 lbs).
- Good visual acuity and manual dexterity required for detailed work and inspections.
- Requires clear verbal communication and listening skills.
Work Environment
- Primarily office-based with periodic work in fabrication or R&D shop areas.
- Exposure to noise, dust, and temperature variations in shop environments.
- Must adhere to safety protocols including eye and ear protection when applicable.
- Occasional travel (less than 10%) to supplier, project, or R&D test sites.
