Description

GENERAL SUMMARY:

Participates as an Environmental Services (E.S.) team member and performs a variety of cleaning and maintenance duties to insure the safety and cleanliness of the internal and external premises of the facility. Interacts on a daily basis with the Lead E.S. Worker, other cleaning service personnel when applicable, maintenance and repair personnel, as well as persons served, guests, and staff. Assists staff with a variety of tasks, such as preparing resident rooms for admission, cleaning public areas, etc.

Essential Functions

 Follows established work schedule in cleaning and maintaining assigned internal areas of responsibility (public areas and hallways, program areas, residential areas, etc.). For example, cleans public restrooms daily, cleans dental clinic two times weekly, etc.

 Follows established work schedule in cleaning and maintaining assigned external premises/grounds (front entrance area, back entrance area by dining room, parking lot areas, fence lines, etc.) of the facility.

 When and where necessary/appropriate, cleans and maintains carpets and flooring, including tasks such as stripping/waxing floors, vacuuming/wet-vacuuming carpets, and spot cleaning soiled areas.

 Maintains a constant awareness of the aesthetic values of the facility and contributes to the enhancement and improvement of these values by insuring clean and aseptic conditions throughout House of Mercy by scouring, dust mopping, high dusting, wet mopping, damp dusting, removing trash, washing walls and ceilings.

 Regularly checks supply inventory and generates purchase orders when/where needed.

 Picks up and returns keys, pager (when applicable) at the beginning and end of each work shift.

 Promptly reports existing furniture needs, as well as equipment, maintenance and building issues to the E.S. Lead Worker and/or Director, completing work orders when/where appropriate.

 Performs general cleaning services throughout the House of Mercy when/where necessary without having to be prompted or asked.

 In absence of Lead E.S. worker and/or any contracted cleaning service staff, takes initiative in identifying soiled areas and promptly following through with necessary cleaning.

 Assists with resident admissions/discharges, insofar as cleaning, shampooing carpets, painting walls, making other minor repairs as needed, and ensuring adequate bedding is available in rooms.

 Assists with painting and maintenance of building’s interior walls.

 Demonstrates initiative in addressing changing/unscheduled environmental service issues where and when they arise.

 Maintains both high standards of courtesy and cooperation in dealing with co-workers, persons served and guests.

 Assists in completing safety checklists and conducting monthly safety drills (i.e. fire and tornado).

  • Participates in House of Mercy’s Performance Quality Improvement Process as appropriate.

 Assists Lead E.S. Worker in maintaining up-to-date Safety Material Data Sheets (MSDS) of chemicals used in the building in the MSDS book kept in the front office.

 Promptly reports/seeks assistance from clinical staff when encountering inappropriate behavior from persons served, guests, visitors, etc. to ensure a safe environment.

 Communicates regularly with Lead E.S. Worker and/or Director to discuss daily operations, concerns, opportunities for improvement, “in-house” issues, etc.

Marginal Functions

 Uses detergents, germicides, or other supplies as recommended and follows recommended handling/mixing procedures.

  • Performs snow removal around facility entrances, including salt application.
  • Sets up tables, chairs, equipment, etc. for special functions.
  • Assists with ongoing upkeep and maintenance of playground surfaces.
  • Provides instruction/supervision to residents performing cleaning tasks as part of the “in-house” program.
  • Moves furniture and equipment as needed.
  • Picks up, sorts and transfers donations as needed.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills And Ability Required

 Ability to read, write, comprehend, and speak English.

 High School Diploma or GED preferred.

 Previous experience in building safety, cleanliness and maintenance preferred.

 Ability to operate a household vacuum, floor cleaning and buffing equipment, etc.

  • Proof of completion of Mandatory Reporter abuse training specific to population served within thirty (30) days of employment.

Physical Demand Requirements

Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds maximum force infrequently and/or up to 25 pounds to lift frequently and/or up to 10 pounds of force to move objects about and requiring prolonged periods of standing/walking.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITY REQUIREMENTS: (Constant = 67-100% of work day, Frequent = 34-66% of work day, Occasional = 33% or less).

CONSTANT

Walking: Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks to perform cleaning duties.

Standing: With some freedom to alternate between standing and walking.

Stooping: Bending body downward and forward at the waist while cleaning.

Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction (e.g. vacuuming, dusting, mopping).

Handling: Working primarily with the whole hand while scouring, dusting, obtaining supplies and handling equipment.

FREQUENT

Pushing/Pulling: To move supply cart with minimal sustained force.

Lifting: To move beds, cribs, box trash, trash bags, linen bags frequently up to 20 lbs. and occasionally in excess of 50 lbs.

Climbing: Up to four flights of stairs, often while wet mopping.

Kneeling or Crouching: With the freedom to choose which posture.

OCCASIONAL

Talking: Expressing ideas by means of the spoken word to convey instructions to other

workers either in person or by phone.

Hearing: Ability to perceive detailed information through oral communication with other workers either in person, by phone, using a beeper, or responding to the in-house paging system.

Visual Acuity Requirements

Normal visual acuity required maintaining accuracy and neatness of work. Must be able, at all times, to see, read, and comprehend labels and written instructions.

Intellectual/Emotional Requirements

 Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.

 Adaptability to performing repetitive work, or to performing continuously of the same work, according to set procedures.

 Adaptability to performing a variety of duties, often changing from one task to another of different nature without loss of efficiency.

 Adaptability to making generalizations, evaluations or decisions based on sensory or judgmental criteria.

  • Ability to maintain both a high standard of courtesy and cooperation in dealing with co-workers, persons served, and guests and satisfactory job performance.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding House of Mercy, staff and residents.

Working Conditions

 The worker is subject to noise: there is sufficient noise at times to cause the worker to raise voice in order to be heard above the ambient noise level.

 The worker is subject to food spills and wet spots on floor surfaces.

 The worker is subject to hazards: chemicals, slippery floors, and occasionally working while on stepladders.

 The worker is subject to atmosphere’s conditions: dust, odors, and aerosol sprays.

 Employees in this job classification have been identified as having the likelihood of occupational exposure to blood or other potentially infectious materials, therefore are included in the OSHA Exposure Control Plan with its specifications for preventing contact with the above materials.
