The Pharmacy Technician II assist pharmacists in preparing, compounding, and dispensing medications and are accountable to the supervising pharmacist who is legally responsible for the care and safety of the patients served by the pharmacy. The Pharmacy Tech II follows applicable standards and federal, state & local laws and regulations for the care and safety of the customers and patients served.

Position Overview

The Pharmacy Technician II plays a key role in supporting pharmacists in the preparation, compounding, dispensing, and delivery of medications while ensuring compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local regulations. Working under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist, this position helps maintain safe and efficient pharmacy operations, supports positive patient outcomes, and provides exceptional customer service to patients and healthcare team members.

Key Responsibilities

Medication Preparation & Distribution

  • Assist pharmacists in preparing, compounding, packaging, and dispensing medications.
  • Accurately fill medication orders and prescriptions in a timely manner.
  • Retrieve, count, measure, mix, and prepare medications for pharmacist verification.
  • Complete department-approved sterile compounding training and prepare sterile products as assigned.
  • Deliver medications to patients, nursing units, curbside locations, homes, or other approved destinations as required.
  • Properly package medications for delivery or shipment.
  • Retrieve unused medications and process applicable credits according to policy.
  • Complete patient follow-up calls when applicable to assigned role.

Inventory & Supply Management

  • Receive, stock, and maintain medication and supply inventory.
  • Ensure the security and proper storage of all medications.
  • Order medications and pharmacy supplies as needed.
  • Monitor assigned areas for outdated medications and remove inventory according to policy.
  • Follow hazardous drug handling and waste disposal procedures.

Technology & Automation

  • Enter and manage medication-related information within EPIC and other pharmacy systems.
  • Demonstrate proficiency with pharmacy automation technology, including robotic dispensing systems and automated dispensing cabinets.
  • Utilize workflow management systems to support efficient pharmacy operations.
  • Perform basic troubleshooting of automated pharmacy technologies and related software systems.
  • Maintain safety, cleanliness, and functionality of pharmacy equipment.

Quality & Compliance

  • Adhere to all pharmacy regulations, accreditation requirements, and Mercy policies.
  • Follow established quality assurance standards and procedures.
  • Prioritize work effectively using sound judgment and attention to patient needs.
  • Ensure timely medication deliveries to nursing and patient care areas.
  • Maintain compliance with all required competencies, training, continuing education, and department standards.

Teamwork & Professional Development

  • Participate in departmental meetings, huddles, and training initiatives.
  • Assist with onboarding and training new pharmacy team members.
  • Communicate effectively with pharmacists, technicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Support smooth transitions between shifts through clear and accurate communication.
  • Complete all hospital and department-specific orientation and competency requirements.

Professionalism & Customer Service

  • Demonstrate Mercy's commitment to exceptional service and patient-centered care.
  • Maintain a professional appearance, proper hygiene, and required personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Display courtesy, professionalism, and respect when interacting with patients, visitors, and coworkers.
  • Adhere to all Mercy policies, procedures, and standards of conduct.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.

Licensure

  • Active registration, in good standing, with the State Board of Pharmacy as a Pharmacy Technician or ability to obtain registration by the first day of employment.
  • Must complete any required fingerprinting and FBI background check processes.

Experience

  • One year of pharmacy experience preferred, but not required.

Certification

  • Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) certification and designation as a Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) required within six months of hire.

Additional Requirements

  • Successful completion of pharmacy department orientation and training programs.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment with competing priorities.
  • Strong attention to detail, accuracy, and patient safety.

Preferred Skills & Abilities

  • Experience with pharmacy automation technologies, robotic dispensing systems, and automated dispensing cabinets.
  • Proficiency with EPIC and pharmacy workflow management systems.
  • Knowledge of sterile compounding procedures and medication preparation.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines while maintaining accuracy and quality standards.
