Position Overview

As a Base Engine Technical Design Specialist, you will serve as a senior technical authority within the Base Engine Design group. At Brunswick, we have passion for our work and a distinct ability to deliver.

Essential Functions

Component Design:

  • Serve as the design owner for assigned base engine components and subsystems, from concept through production release.
  • Typical component responsibility may include cylinder heads, valvetrain, combustion system elements, crankshafts, connecting rods, pistons, bearings, and balance systems.
  • Lead detailed planning, mechanical design, analysis, and production release activities to meet challenging requirements.
  • Utilize CAE to guide and interpret design decisions.
  • Author and maintain component-level design specifications.
  • Develop and execute Design Validation Plans (DVPs) for assigned hardware.
  • Work closely with Analysis, Thermodynamics, Mechanical Development, Manufacturing, Quality, Purchasing, and Suppliers.
  • Lead fast paced, complex mechanical design projects with high technical difficulty and business impact.
  • Design and interpret cost-effective experiments to reduce technical risk.
  • Challenge legacy solutions and introduce innovative, manufacturable designs.
  • Generate patentable ideas leading to commercial success.

System-Level Technical Leadership (As Needed)

  • Act as a trusted subject-matter expert for overall base engine architecture, system behavior, and integration.
  • Provide engineering recommendations on system-level tradeoffs involving performance, durability, NVH, weight, cost, and manufacturability.
  • Participate in design reviews, issue resolution, and root-cause investigations crossing component boundaries.
  • Mentor and technically guide team members.
  • Help define and reinforce best practices and technical standards.

Diversity of thought and experiences is fundamental when imagining the unimaginable. Certain skillsets/experiences are necessary; however, others can be developed along the way.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
  • 10 years of progressive experience in internal combustion engine design.
  • Demonstrated ownership of critical base engine components.
  • Broad understanding of overall engine system behavior.
  • Proven ability to define and execute comprehensive DVPs.
  • Strong understanding of manufacturing processes including casting, forging, machining, heat treatment, grinding, balancing, and assembly.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
  • Proficiency with Creo / ProE.
