Job Description

Under the guidance of the Radiation Safety Officer and EHS leadership, the Radiation Safety Specialist is responsible for supporting compliant environmental, health, and safety (EHS) programs to departments at West Point, North Wales, and Springhouse Innovation Park sites. The Safety Specialist integrates EHS programs into daily operations to assure regulatory compliance, achieves continuous performance improvement, meeting EHS performance objectives. Partners with operations to develop objectives to achieve these goals in alignment with site business goals and values.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop, implement, and maintain radiation safety procedures, programs, and systems in accordance with regulatory and company requirements.
  • Manage and maintain radiation detection instrumentation, including calibration, troubleshooting, and inventory of portable and fixed equipment.
  • Conduct routine and special-area radiation surveys and inspections to assess compliance with safety and regulatory requirements for the safe use of radioactive materials and radiation producing equipment. 
  • Coordinate dosimetry program activities, including dosimeter exchanges, data tracking, and regulatory recordkeeping.
  • Receive, inspect, and monitor radioactive material (RAM) shipments.
  • Support non-ionizing radiation and laser safety programs, manage change requests, and perform program audits and surveys.
  • Develop, deliver, and maintain radiation safety training and technical content; provide operational support and guidance to personnel on radiation safety procedures and best practices. 
  • Investigate radiation-related incidents and unsafe conditions; recommend and implement corrective and preventive actions.
  • Identify opportunities for process, procedure, and equipment improvements to minimize risk and enhance safety performance.
  • Support broader EHS initiatives, including digital systems, compliance processes, and organizational programs within the Research Laboratories Division.
  • Provide general EHS support as needed; responsibilities may extend beyond radiation safety.
  • Participate in emergency response by carrying the EHS spill phone and responding to after-hours incidents, as required.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in physical science or related technical field.
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in radiation safety or a related scientific discipline with working knowledge of federal and state regulations governing radioactive materials and radiation-producing equipment.
  • Strong critical thinking and effective communication skills.
  • Experience managing radioactive and mixed waste programs in compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build and maintain collaborative working relationships.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and strong organizational abilities.
  • Proficient in computer applications and highly effective in both written and verbal communication.
  • Demonstrated ability in project management and problem-solving within a technical or regulatory environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in Environmental Health & Safety
  • National Registry of Radiation Protection Technologists, Certified Health Physicist, Certified Industrial Hygienist, Certified Safety Professional, Professional Engineer or related certification

The salary range for this role is

$87,300.00 - $137,400.00

This is the lowest to highest salary we in good faith believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting. An employee’s position within the salary range will be based on several factors including, but not limited to relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, geographic location, government requirements, and business or organizational needs.

The successful candidate will be eligible for annual bonus and long-term incentive, if applicable.
