What are the responsibilities and job description for the Weekend Front of House Server/Support position at Merchant?
We're looking for someone to join our Front of House Team who can work primarily (if not only) weekends. Our ideal candidate is someone who could flex across hosting, expoing, backwaiting, and serving. Full availability on weekends is required and ability to work doubles is a huge advantage. Our Front of House Team offers the first impression in the restaurant and is expected to deliver positive experiences for our guests. Responsibilities include:
- Welcome our guests in a warm and hospitable way and manage the timely and efficient seating at the venue.
- Provide knowledgeable, friendly and attentive, efficient, friendly, energetic, and thoughtful service at all times.
- Promptly address customer service issues and refer customers to onsite management when necessary.
- Receive instruction from multiple sources and prioritize tasks effectively.
- Support team members in the completion of their duties to ensure satisfaction of all guests before, during, and after service.
- Stocking, organizing and preparing service related items.
- Be knowledgeable of the restaurant and its history.
- Communicate respectfully with coworkers at all levels.
- Gain proficient knowledge of OpenTable and Toast and our policies.
- Gain knowledge of restaurant POS software
- Facilitate to-go orders accordingly through phone orders, 3rd party platforms, etc.
- Prepare the dining room for dining by setting tables and performing other cleaning and tidying duties.
Menu Knowledge
- Be knowledgeable about every menu item served: what it tastes of; ingredients listed on the menu; where it comes from, and be able to translate that into 3 ‘selling points’ for each menu item.
Floor Operations
- Knowledge of restaurant POS software
- Knowledge of table numbers, the seating chart, reservation policy
- Facilitate to-go orders accordingly through phone orders, 3rd party platforms, etc.
- Record orders accurately and immediately after having received them into the register system.
- Process payments, money handling- Accept guest payment, process credit card charges, and make change if necessary. Sanitize handhelds, POS screens, pens and check presenters periodically, and after contact with guests
- Communicate with serve assists to clear used plates, utensils and menus from tables, and maintain a clean environment for guests at all times
- Provide guests with clean plates, utensils, menus and condiments as needed
- Prepare dining room by setting tables after they are cleared and sanitized
- Organize and stock server station
- Keep kitchen staff informed by noting timing of meal progression
- Manage your Schedule: Responsibly handle on-call shifts, time-off requests, getting shifts covered, and manager communications
- Protect establishment and patrons by adhering to sanitation, safety and alcohol beverage control policies
- Perform basic cleaning tasks as needed or directed by supervisor
Reporting:
The role will report to Leads, Shift Leads and the Administrative General Manager of Merchant.

Our ideal Front of House employee has the following attributes:
- Has 6 months of restaurant experience. Front desk experience is a plus.
- Experience with reservation systems such as OpenTable preferred
- The ideal host has excellent personal qualities, is polite, confident, a great sense of humor and above all, enjoys dealing with people.
- The host should be warm and genuine using verbiage and vocabulary that is guest-focused and positive
- The host controls the entire flow of the restaurant. Organization is key while always being calm and collected.
- Able to thrive in a team environment as a reliable and trustworthy player on the floor.
- The host, along with all staff members, is expected to be clean, neat and tidy in their personal appearance and also in their working habits; they shall also maintain the highest standards of hygiene in their workplace.

Pay Rate: $16-20/hr, inclusive of tip-out
