What are the responsibilities and job description for the Plant Manager position at Mercer Milling?
Responsibilities:
• Lead and ensure mill operations are conducted safely and in full compliance with regulatory requirements and corporate safety and environmental programs, standards, and goals.
• Lead two production team shifts, including Production Supervisors and Managers.
• Lead, train, and implement the SafeStart program to promote continuous development of a strong safety culture and achievement of safety goals, ensuring strict adherence to all safety policies and procedures.
• Partner with the Director of Nutrition and the Quality Assurance & Control Manager to ensure all feed produced meets Mercer’s quality standards and to implement cross-functional best practices.
• Operate equipment and technology tools in the facility to mix, grind, pack, weigh, palletize, etc. (may include forklift operation).
• Manufacture products to ensure specifications are met.
• Interact regularly with team members and managers on both shifts to achieve expectations, goals and changes.
• Follow all expectations to ensure high quality product specifications (cleanliness, measurement, detailed instructions).
• Accountable for delivering against KPIs and production goals while fostering a welcoming culture that prioritizes safety, people, quality and compliance through responsibility, respect and relentless improvement.
• Lead and develop a team, coach and make decisions related to talent management, hiring, performance, and disciplinary actions.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.
Required Skills/ Abilities:
• Technical Skills: Proficient with ERP Software & Inventory Database, and Microsoft Office, especially Excel and Word. Experience with WEM or other feed mill PLC control system required.
• Excellent analytical skills and proactive/results orientation.
• Good communication skills: coaching teams at various levels depending on need; modeling acceptance of company policies and job expectations.
• Utilize a growth mindset to meet job expectations
• Knowledge of manufacturing processes.
• Knowledge of Safety programs and procedures.
• Knowledge of Quality control process and programs.
Physical Requirements:
• Periods working on feet, walking, bending, stretching, lifting, climbing, and performing repetitive actions.
• Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds on occasion.
• Manual dexterity needed to operate machinery and equipment.
• Visual acuity needed to inspect machinery.
• Must be able to work in indoor and outdoor conditions which may include heat, cold, dust, heights (regular climbing of ladders and sometimes up to 150 feet), loud noise, etc., with the use of personal protective equipment (PPE)
Bachelor’s degree in Business/Operations Management preferred. Minimum of 5 years related experience, preferably in feed mill management role.
Forklift operation and experience with OSHA safety compliance preferred.
