Job Overview
The Mental Health Empowerment Project, Inc. (MHEP) is a recipient-run, not-for-profit corporation organized in 1988 to develop and strengthen self-help and mutual support/recovery activities throughout the United States.
MHEP offers dynamic and cutting-edge education, training, skill building, and support that help people find their unique voice, connect to their personal power, and recognize the power of peer support - a holistic alternative to medical model mental health services.
TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THIS POSITION:
The successful candidate will have direct personal experience using mental health services, be comfortable discussing that experience, and be confident in modeling principles of recovery and wellness. Peer Specialist Certification is preferred and must be obtained within six months of hire if not already held. Demonstrated experience working with individuals from diverse backgrounds and with underserved communities is required. Some weekend and weekly evening hours will be required for Outreach events and efforts. The ideal candidate will have experience coordinating events as part of a team and collaborating with multiple organizations to host successful events.
POSITION SUMMARY
- Working with people in one-to-one and group settings, facilitating peer support groups, events and activities, in-person, by phone, and online.
- Helping people establish creative community connections and assisting them to develop natural support.
- Establishing connections to community-based activities that enhance wellness, recovery and social engagement.
- Providing individualized peer-to-peer outreach and support in their homes, online, and other settings to people who may find it difficult to reach out and connect to their communities.
- Offering individualized advocacy and support services to help a person learn about and protect
their rights and interests.
- Organizing and coordinating wellness/recovery events and activities with a team.
- Additional tasks as assigned by the supervisor.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Will be an active team member, offering support and assistance to ongoing projects.
- Will be able to work independently on projects, meeting deadlines and taking initiative.
- Will have basic computer skills; competence in Microsoft Office required.
- Will demonstrate knowledge of job duties through follow-up and accurate record-keeping.
- A clean NYS Driver's License and reliable transportation are also preferred.
- Candidates are expected to have their New York Peer Specialist Certification – CPS-P candidates will also be considered.
