Position Summary:
The Crane Operator Trainee is responsible for learning the correct set up (assembly and familiarizing oneself with site conditions and/or site restrictions) and operation of a mobile crane used to lift, move, position or reposition loads, and unload crane accessories from trailer or support vehicles. The Crane Operator Trainee will collaborate with and receive direction from riggers and/or site supervision via verbal or hand signals to determine required load movement and will work as ground crew depending on the tasks being performed. Operator Trainees will be required to know and follow all appropriate safety procedures, maintain logs of vehicle repair status, and working hours (FMCSA).
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:
- Learn and receive training in order to operate various types of cranes: All Terrain, Rough Terrain, Crawlers, Industrial, Hydraulic Trucks, Conventional Trucks, and Boom Trucks. (Hydraulic Truck Crane Operators operate diesel powered, truck-mounted cranes used to lift materials, objects, or personnel into place).
- If properly licensed, drive truck and/or crane to the work site and working under supervision, properly sets up the crane per the manufacturer’s operators manual and company rules regarding cribbing / matting, cribbing blocks or mats as required per customer job requirements and MEI standards.
- Place cribbing blocks and/or pads, move levers and foot pedals to rotate super structure, raise and lowers boom to raise and lower cables.
- Operate crane according to verbal or hand signals from oiler or helper; may bolt or pin boom sections together to modify boom lengths.
- Perform pre- and post-trip inspections along with daily and monthly equipment inspections.
- Perform routine maintenance; proactively carry tools necessary for running repairs.
- Properly barricades counterweight tail swing and working radius.
- Learn, understand, and be accountable for all safety pertaining to assembly, disassembly, and operation of crane. Wears PPE safety equipment per MEI requirements.
- Understand and accurately complete job ticket for customer(s) to accept responsibility for jobsite and billing.
- Able to travel as needed. Some travel may require overnight stays.
- Perform all other duties as necessary or assigned.
Minimum Qualifications (Experience, Skills, and Education):
- High School Diploma or equivalent. Must be able to perform Geometry calculations at a high school level.
- Knowledge of the content and structure of the English language, including the meaning and spelling of words; must be able to keep accurate and legible logs and records or convey information, in English.
- Know, understand, and use appropriate hand signals.
- Have good situational awareness for safe equipment operation while around or near people and objects.
- Be willing to learn and is able to take instruction from varying sources or diverse levels of authority.
- Be willing to attain a Crane Operation (NCCCO) certification and/or Telescopic Boom Crane Swing Cab (TLL) or Fixed Cab (TSS) certification preferred.
- Knowledgeable in OSHA regulations and ANSI standards in crane operations
- Minimum of a CDL–B license required.
- Must be able to pass a drug test, background check, and DOT physical/fit for duty test.
- Two letters of recommendation from A&A/MEI foremen or site leaders
Preferred Qualifications:
- Proficient knowledge using a Windows based computer, including intermediate understanding of Excel, Word, and Outlook.
- CDL-A License preferred.
- Proficient oral and written communication skills, technical skills, and functional skills.
- Working knowledge of rigging, cranes, and commercial or industrial moving and storage.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to climb, stand; walk; sit; lift and/or move up to 50 pounds; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; use fingers and hands to adjust straps, move equipment and perform daily duties; reach with hands and arms; push feet to operate crane; pull handles and grasp equipment; talk and hear. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The Operator is subject to possible exposure to extreme year-round outdoor environmental conditions and may also be subject to working weekends and holidays.
Additional Requirements:
The Crane Operator Trainee Program will require an updated non-solicitation agreement and non-compete letter prior to the beginning of training.
