American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreter

Position Summary

We are seeking a highly qualified American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreter to provide full-time onsite communication support for Deaf and Hard of Hearing (HoH) employees in a professional and technical work environment. The interpreter will facilitate effective communication through sign language interpreting, transliterating, and sight translation services during meetings, training sessions, workplace interactions, and other business activities conducted both in person and virtually.

This position requires a commitment to professional interpreting standards, confidentiality, cultural competence, and the ability to work in diverse workplace settings, including office, laboratory, and operational environments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide accurate and effective ASL interpreting services between Deaf/HoH employees and hearing colleagues.
  • Perform sign-to-voice and voice-to-sign interpretation during meetings, briefings, training sessions, presentations, and day-to-day workplace interactions.
  • Provide transliteration and sight translation services as requested.
  • Support communication in both in-person and virtual meeting environments.
  • Maintain professional neutrality and adhere to the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Code of Professional Conduct.
  • Accurately convey meaning, tone, intent, nuance, and context of all communications.
  • Facilitate communication using a variety of communication methods, including:
  • American Sign Language (ASL)
  • Pidgin Sign English (PSE)
  • Manually Coded English (MCE)
  • Contact Sign
  • Tactile Sign
  • Oral Transliteration
  • Provide voice interpretation when a Deaf or Hard of Hearing individual's speech may not be readily understood by hearing participants.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all workplace communications and sensitive information.
  • Work collaboratively with employees, supervisors, and stakeholders to ensure effective communication access.
  • Utilize assigned technology and network resources to support virtual interpreting services.
  • Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) when interpreting in laboratory, industrial, or operational environments.

Work Schedule

  • Full-time onsite position.
  • Standard working hours: Monday through Friday, 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM.
  • Schedule may be adjusted due to organizational closures or holidays.
  • Lunch break scheduled around interpreting requirements.

Required Qualifications

  • Current and valid certification from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID).
  • Minimum of three (3) years of professional ASL interpreting experience.
  • Demonstrated fluency in both American Sign Language (ASL) and English.
  • Strong understanding of Deaf culture and communication accessibility practices.
  • Ability to interpret complex technical, professional, and workplace-related discussions.
  • Ability to maintain pace with normal conversational and meeting environments.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Commitment to maintaining professional ethics and confidentiality.

Security and Eligibility Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship required.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain required security credentials and facility access.
  • Must maintain eligibility for applicable personnel security requirements throughout employment.

Physical and Environmental Requirements

  • Ability to work in office, laboratory, and operational settings.
  • Ability to wear and use required safety equipment, including hearing protection, eye protection, safety vests, gloves, hard hats, and protective footwear when necessary.
  • Ability to participate in extended meetings and maintain high levels of concentration and accuracy throughout interpreting assignments.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting government, defense, engineering, scientific, or technical organizations.
  • Experience interpreting in highly technical or specialized environments.
  • Familiarity with virtual meeting platforms and remote interpreting technologies.

Pay: $26.07 - $31.39 per hour
